Melania Trump To Unveil Policy Priorities

(COMBO) This combination of file pictures created on July 19, 2016 shows Melania Trump (L), wife of presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, addressing delegates on the first day of the Republican National Convention on July 18, 2016 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 18, 2016 and Michelle Obama, wife of US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, greeting the audience at the Democratic National Convention 2008 at the Pepsi Center in Denver on August 25, 2008. Donald Trump faced an embarrassing plagiarism scandal on July 19, 2016 that tarnished his wife Melania's prime-time speech to a Republican National Convention already roiled by an opening day rank-and-file revolt. It was a rough start to the four-day buildup to Trump's presidential nomination, one designed for maximum media exposure for the Republican standard bearer and his supporters. / AFP PHOTO / ALEX WONG AND PAUL J. Melania Trump will finally do it!

After months of anticipation, our stylish First Lady is set to unveil a set of policy priorities she wishes to pursue as First Lady of the United States. And here’s the best news: Melania’s priorities are not pie-in-the-sky hopes or liberal patronizing. They’re a set of realistic objectives with real relevance to Americans.

Melania is set to unveil her policy objectives later today, but we already have a preview of what the focus will be on: children’s health.

NPR reports:

Melania Trump rarely campaigned with her husband and waited months after his inauguration before moving to the White House. But she has made occasional appearances that offer clues about her priorities.

Her spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham tells NPR there are “many issues” facing children today, and that the first lady’s initiatives will try to help them to handle those challenges. Grisham says the first lady will continue to focus on many of the subjects she has addressed in the past.

Areas of focus on children’s health will be online bullying, social media, and the opioid crisis.

Notice a pattern here? All three are topics not given the attention they deserve from the mainstream media. The opioid crisis is ravaging Middle America, which is regarded with disdain as “Trump country” by liberal reporters. Social media abuse, including addiction to popular properties like Facebook and Twitter, is all but ignored by the news reporting industry because publications rely so heavily on their use. And as for online bullying, the media is perfectly willing to zero in on President Trump’s abrasive tweets, but never on reporters and publications with big followings harassing innocent people on and offline.

Now contrast these priorities with those of Michelle Obama. The former First Lady wanted to make school lunches more healthy by making them unappetizing and less filling. Yes, childhood obesity is a problem. But it’s not one that can be solved by replacing french fries with salad during lunch.

Michelle Obama’s second big initiative was her “Let’s Move” campaign aimed at getting kids exercising more through, what often looked like, dorky shimmying. I think we can all agree that Obama’s idea of dancing to cut calories was half-hearted at best.

It’s no wonder kids criticized Obama in droves for ruining their lunches. Meanwhile, Melania is tackling real problems head-on by striking at the root of their cause.
