Michelle Obama probably receives a fair share of handwritten fan mail, and probably a few negative ones in between. But she’s probably never received one as wide-ranging in its criticism as the following letter.
The Weekly Standard published a note from a “concerned” citizen that runs the gamut of suggestions and criticisms for the First Lady. In the letter, the author named Peter shreds Mrs. Obama’s healthy lunch program, policies that limit patriotism, her husband’s foreign policy, and tells her that the President should really “work on his speeches.”
What makes this letter even more unique? Peter is an 8-year-old.
The daggers are out from the onset, as within a few short sentences Peter writes about learning of “the great choices the USA has made” throughout history, then pivoted with “and then there was your husband’s election.”
Ouch.
The young man is dismayed by Michelle Obama’s apparent ‘one ketchup packet’ lunch room policy, saying the concept is “taking away our patriotism toward America.”
He adds that the President should “stop doing nothing and send some troops to the Middle East” because “he’s disappointed millions of Americans.”
On this, we feel your pain, Peter.

A friend sends along an email attachment—a handwritten letter by his 8-year-old son, Peter. It’s addressed to First Lady Michelle Obama. “It all started because he saw something about school lunches [and] how ketchup is bad for you, and that Michelle Obama wants to limit the amount of ketchup” in schools, my friend explained. When the boy’s mother reminded him he attends a private school, making the ketchup rationing a nonissue, “He said something about wanting to ‘give a voice to the voiceless.’”
But ketchup is actually the least of the boy’s concerns, as he then continues onto foreign policy, the crisis in the Middle East, and the need for boots on the ground.
…
“We found it on his desk,” said his father. “He started it in October, but did not finish it until a couple weeks ago. He said he was ‘too angry’ to go on.” (Peter does, however, conclude his letter by asking the first lady, “Is the White House comfortable?”)
What do you think of Peter’s efforts in his letter to Michelle Obama?
