Jared Heine is a Marine who suffers from PTSD. While in Afghanistan, Heine worked with a black lab named Spike. The two searched for IEDs together. They bonded and essentially spent all of their time together. Then Heine was sent home because of brain injuries.
His mom decided to search for Spike because just speaking about his canine partner made Heine feel better. Through Facebook and the military, she found the dog was working with Laura Taylor of Virginia Capitol Police’s K9 unit.
When Heine and Spike were reintroduced, Taylor knew where Spike belonged. Spike will officially retire on March 5th and will be heading home with his favorite Marine.
