AT&T Raises Wages of 200,000 Employees After Tax Bill Passes

It wasn’t long after House Republicans passed tax reform and sent it to President Trump’s desk that one American company responded in incredible fashion.

There was a time when AT&T was the nation’s largest employer. While the company has shrunk over time, it remains one of the biggest in America. Despite only employing a third as many people as they did during the company’s peak in the 1960s, AT&T still employs over 273,000 people. While many companies (particularly those in the tech industry) are notoriously good at hiding money overseas, those in the telecommunications industry have to pay close attention to the current 35 percent marginal corporate tax rate.

For that reason, the corporate tax rate cut today to 21 percent is massive. And AT&T is going to be a huge beneficiary. Back in November they pledged to invest $1 billion in America if tax reform passed, and they just kept their promise. According to CNBC: “The telecom giant said in a press release on Wednesday that it would give more than 200,000 U.S. union members a special bonus of $1,000. The company also increased its capital expenditures budget by $1 billion in the U.S.”

More from the report:

“Congress, working closely with the President, took a monumental step to bring taxes paid by U.S. businesses in line with the rest of the industrialized world,” CEO Randall Stephenson said in a statement. “This tax reform will drive economic growth and create good-paying jobs. In fact, we will increase our U.S. investment and pay a special bonus to our U.S. employees.”

Many are speculating that that this was a superficial move. AT&T is currently trying to merge with another big media and communications company, Time Warner. This announcement will assuredly be touted by Trump as proof of his success. That may, in turn, make him more comfortable with allowing the merger to go through.

Regardless, I doubt AT&T employees are thinking about that right now. They just got a big Christmas bonus. What a wonderful gift!

  1. AT&T is one of the biggest thieves out there, overcharging, absolutely rotten and retarded customer “service,” I’d prefer to see them go under. But they won’t because they make a killing overcharging people.

  2. TRUMP/PENCE 2020 for sure! He is making America Great Again! WTF were people thinking when they put that good for nothing Obama in our WHITE HOUSE? F**king Libturds….can’t stand em and lord knows we can live without em. Hang em all! HA!

  3. Wow, the difference a real President (President Trump) makes over the economic policies of a failed community organizer labeled as President (obama) is astounding and the lib media won’t report the truth because they don’t like President Trump and the fact he can’t be bought by the media and other libs – TRUMP-PENCE 2020, Making America Great Again!

  4. Let me tell what happened to me with AT&T. I was a loyal customer of AT&T for 22 years. with a landline and mobile cell phone. They started this thing called Bundle merging your landline and cell to one billing cycle that can save the consumer $20 dollars monthly. I jumped for it. March 2003 I think it was I made the mistake of paying $253. AND some cent twice, three days later I saw this mistake and knowing my other bills that I paid were going to bounce. I called Customer Service and told the gentleman what I had done and my other bills weren’t going to cover my bank’s overdraft. He said no problem just send him a copy of my bank statement showing the double payment and he would see that the money would be deposited back into my banking account within 5 business days. I called my Bank representative told them what I had done and needed to pick up a statement showing the double payment to fax to AT&T so that I wouldn’t get charged with overdrafts. Did it done all that was said for me to do. Nothing happened no reimbursement, I called every day for a month I got the same run around “we didn’t receive the fax”. I contacted the F.C.C. sent them the faxed bank statement and a copy of the AT&T charges. Within a 2 week period, FCC sent me a letter showing that AT&T indeed owed me $253 dollars and some cents hassle was with the landline customer service. So I canceled my landline service, who had a $250 dollar deposit belonging to me. I was given the $253 dollars by check sent to me from the cell phone. Landline said I still owed a bill to them in the amount of $253+, I explained again what had occurred 7 weeks before. They turned off my landline phone for non-payment(I was hot) took me over a year to the date along with 8 pages of documents faxed 13 times. Then I was sent $250 dollars my deposited back. There is much much more in what happened. I ran into a difficult time in paying my cell phone for adding a line for $9.99. Which I was told would be added to my cell bill my normal bill was $49 dollars + $9.99 which should be $58 my bill billed to me was $163+. I started crying because I had to sign a two-year contract I received two new phones I called Customer service tell the lady I could not afford this new account I set up and how can I get out of this contracts she said let me look at your billing I will be back shortly. When she came back online she told me I was overcharged and that my bill was $63+ was that ok with me yes yes I said she told me if I received a bill from AT&T that was over $63+ to call them back because that will be an overcharge. Three months later I was sent a charge of $98.+So I did what the lady told me to doI called and reported the overcharge. I received the run around again, $42.+ was my plan amount + another $42+ because I had 2 plans and an add a line for $9.99. How could this be I said the add a line was $9.99, not two plans plus $9.99 well sorry mam was his reply those charges are correct. Am hot again, I will cancel my plans when my contract ends. This goes on and on the longer story, cut short I canceled my AT&T account 2013 with overcharges again. They turned me into a collection service for the amount of $800.++ my contract was over on September 9, 2013, and I canceled on November 11, 2013. They are claiming that I owed for a two-year contract. yes, I have all the documents to prove this. So AT&T rips off loyal customers, of 22 years using them.
