President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign announced on Wednesday that it is suing the state of Michigan to halt vote counting until it is given access to watch the tabulation process.
Trump Campaign Files Lawsuit
Campaign manager Bill Stepien released a statement in which he claimed that Trump’s campaign had not been given “meaningful access” to watch the opening of ballots at various locations in Michigan, according to The Hill.
“We have filed suit today in the Michigan Court of Claims to halt counting until meaningful access has been granted,” Stepien said. “We also demand to review those ballots which were opened and counted while we did not have meaningful access. President Trump is committed to ensuring that all legal votes are counted in Michigan and everywhere else.”

Trump’s reelection campaign filed this lawsuit after Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden took the lead in Michigan as mail in ballots continued to be reported overnight. On Wednesday afternoon, Trump took to Twitter to question the legitimacy of counting votes after Election Day.
“They are working hard to make up 500,000 vote advantage in Pennsylvania disappear — ASAP. Likewise, Michigan and others!” Trump wrote.
Trump Had The Lead In Michigan Last Night
Though the president had the lead in Michigan on Wednesday night, this shifted as mail in and absentee ballots started to pour in. Michigan laws reportedly prevented officials from processing these ballots before Election Day.
Trump’s campaign has also requested a recount in Wisconsin, where he has been reported to be behind Biden by around 20,000 votes, and they have indicated they may challenge results in Nevada as well.
“We are obviously leading a full court press to make sure that we have all of our legal teams that are in place,” senior Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller explained on Wednesday morning. “We want to make sure that all legally cast ballots are counted. We also want to make sure that illegally cast ballots are not counted.”
