Tim Allen Addresses Rumors Of ‘Home Improvement’ Reboot

“Home Improvement” is one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time, and fans have been clamoring for a reboot of it ever since it went off the air in 1999 after eight seasons and 204 episodes. Now, the show’s legendary star Tim Allen is speaking out to address rumors of a potential reboot or spinoff of this iconic show.

Allen Talks Potential ‘Home Improvement’ Reboot

“I see Richard Karn a lot,” Allen, 70, told The Messenger. “And I talk to the boys [Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Taran Noah Smith, who played Allen’s kids on the show]ā€¦ and I’m there as one of their friends. We keep talking about [a spinoff].”

“It’s funny, one of the conversations we’ve had recently is how weird it would be if ‘Home Improvement’ would be about the kids’ kids,” he continued. “Like if all of them had children, and I’m a grandparent. ;Home Re-Improvement; or something like that. It’s come up.”

Allen starred on “Home Improvement,” which ran from 1991-1999, along with Bryan, Thomas, Smith, Karn, Patricia Richardson and Debbe Dunning.

Allen’s Previous Comments On Rebooting ‘Home Improvement’

Allen had previously addressed the possibility of “Home Improvement” in a 2018 interview with Entertainment Tonight.

“I can’t say everybody, but itĀ hasĀ been floated,” Allen said. “And more than I would have expected said, ‘Yeah, that would be cool to do it years later,’ like ‘Roseanne.'”

Later that same year, Allen told E! News that when it comes to “Home Improvement,” there’s still more story to tell.

“I never felt ā€” and it’s come true ā€” that this was done,” Allen said of the show coming to an end. “It never felt right. In the time off, we got real close where we talked to everybody.”

Patricia Richardson Speaks OutĀ 

This isn’t the first time that it’s been reported that Allen felt that “Home Improvement” ended prematurely. Patricia Richardson, who played his wife on the show, told Entertainment Tonight in 2020 that she fears that Allen hasĀ “never really forgiven me for not wanting to do the ninth year.”

“He loved Tim Taylor,” she said, referring to Allen’s “Home Improvement” character. “Tim Taylor was this happily married man with his great boys and great life, and so he wanted that show to go on forever.”

Despite intense pressure from both Allen and the network to stay on for another season, Richardson felt that it was time to step away from “Home Improvement” in 1999.

“So then they went to Tim, and they said let’s do it with dead Jill,” she revealed.Ā “And then Tim was like, I don’t think we can do that. So then he went out and said well, I think it’s time to endĀ ‘Home Improvement.'”

Even so, Richardson still looks back fondly at her time on “Home Improvement.”

“If you get a hit show, it is so unusual,” she said. “It just, really,Ā it’s like winning the lottery to have something like Home Improvement.”

Allen has stayed as busy as ever since “Home Improvement” ended, as he scored another hit sitcom with “Last Man Standing,” which ran from 2011-2021. These days, he’s starring in the series “The Santa Clauses,” which is currently streaming on Disney+.
