An Associated Press report indicates that 30 children from three separate school districts in California are still stuck in Afghanistan.
The children had traveled to Afghanistan to visit relatives just weeks before the Taliban seized control.
The AP reveals that officials from the three school districts – San Juan Union School District (27 students), Sacramento City Unified School District (3 students), and Cajon Valley Union School District (1 family) – have been in contact with the families.
The outlet reports that the families “fear they have been forgotten by the U.S. government.”
The districts note that the children “were unable to get out before U.S. forces left.”
Most, according to the report, had traveled to Afghanistan with one or more parents as an independent trip to see their relatives.
“Some of the children were born in the United States and are U.S. citizens,” they write.
Tara Gallegos, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento City Unified School District, called news of the children stuck in Afghanistan “heartbreaking.”
Raj Rai, a spokeswoman for San Juan Union School District where 27 students from 19 families have been identified as stuck, sent an email to the Associated Press about the situation.
“San Juan Unified stands with our Afghan community and all those whose loved ones are currently in Afghanistan,” she said. “We sincerely hope for their speedy and safe return back to the U.S. and back to our school communities.”
Rai added a glimmer of hope for the children.
She said the school district had been in contact with elected officials in trying to aid their return, adding that they’ve been unable to reach the families over the last few days, perhaps a sign they “may be in transit out of Afghanistan.”
It’s rather remarkable that some of the more extreme members of the Democrat Party who spent the last four years making political hay over “the children” have little to say about American children being left behind in Afghanistan by the current President.
Wasn’t it just two short years ago that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shared these super-serious images and lamented how we’ve become “a nation that steals refugee children”?
And yet, nothing these American children left behind in Afghanistan.
Nor did we hear her mention the children that were reportedly killed in a drone strike by the United States following a suicide bombing near the gates of Kabul’s airport in Afghanistan.
Axios reported on Wednesday they had reviewed data indicating the Biden administration has lost track of roughly one-third of illegal immigrant children who have been released from custody.
The report, according to Fox News, “suggest(s) the United States is not adequately protecting those children from harm.”
What has changed since January that would cause the congresswoman to get cold feet about calling out to defend the children?
President Biden has called the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan which culminated with a terrorist attack that took the lives of 13 service members an “extraordinary success.”
Biden criticized those still in Afghanistan saying the government had “reached out 19 times to Americans in Afghanistan, with multiple warnings and offers to help them leave.”
Still, he said, “We remain committed to get them out if they want to come out.”
A poll this week indicates a vast majority of voters believe Biden should either resign or be impeached over his handling of the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Until these school children are located and returned safely to the United States, poll numbers should be the least of his worries.
