The liberals “resisting” Donald Trump’s America-first agenda don’t realize how centrist many of the President’s positions actually are.
Take an issue like illegal immigration, which Trump made the cornerstone of his presidential campaign. As liberals chant “no borders, no walls!” they should be aware that it wasn’t long ago that most Democrats would’ve been on board with Trump’s policies.
After all, just listen to what Bill Clinton had to say about border security when he was president.
Heck, even as recently as 2006, Congress voted on the Secure Fence Act. Section 3 of that Act directed the Secretary of Homeland Security to provide for the construction of a double-layered fence along the Mexican border, totaling 700 miles in length.
And want to take a guess on who voted in favor of it? You’ll see some names you recognize: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, among over two dozen other Senate Democrats. For some perspective, Trump said that his proposed border wall would be roughly 1,000 miles in length, or “only” 43% larger than one that Democrats have already voted in favor of.
Illegal immigration is hardly the only issue where Democrats have gone to the extreme left on – and a new study has proven as much.
The Pew Research Center is out with a new study titled “The Partisan Divide on Political Values Grows Even Wider.” Given the media’s far-left bias, it’s easy for a casual observer to conclude that the widening partisan gap is due to Republicans becoming more extreme. After all, they’re the party of the racists, sexists, xenophobes, Islamophobes, etc. Some liberal pundits even try to pretend that the GOP is against birth control, which is a bit bizarre given that I have yet to see a Republican politician with 30 kids.
For as much as Democrats like to portray themselves as being on the side of “common sense,” and “humanity,” Pew’s findings clearly contradict that.
Pew used a 10-item scale measuring political values to determine the so-called ideological purity among those who claim affiliation with the two main parties. The results show that the Republican center moved only slightly to the right over the past 23 years, while the center of the Democrat Party shifted far to the left. That’s visualized below:
