Tim Allen’s ‘Last Man Standing’ to Return On Fox

Fans were outraged when ABC canceled Tim Allen’s popular sitcom “Last Man Standing” last year, and many couldn’t help but suspect that the reason why was political. The show had become popular among conservatives, as Allen had often used the show as a platform to espouse conservative views. For once, a conservative character on a show didn’t exist to parody or mock conservatives.

ABC said that “Politics had absolutely nothing to do with it — we have actors on our shows who have all sorts of different political views” – but what other reason would they have when the show boasted great ratings? Allen himself said he was “blindsided” by the cancellation.

Earlier in the month, Fox announced that they’d be picking up the show to revive it.

As Fox News reported:

Fox is reviving the series which was the number two comedy on ABC, but was canceled anyway much to the dismay of fans. Fox, spurred by the audience engagement being received by ABC’s’ “Roseanne” revival, said it made the call to bring back the Tim Allen-led comedy after axing several of its other comedy offerings such as “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “The Mick.”

Some are calling it the “Roseanne effect,” because the main character of “Roseanne” is a Trump supporter. Roseanne returned to ABC relatively recently with killer ratings. Fox saw that (and “Last Man Standing’s” own prior ratings) and seized the opportunity to bring back the show. They’ve admitted as much themselves.

You’d think the decision to renew and cancel shows would be dependent on the quality of the ratings, but apparently, that wasn’t the case at ABC. “Last Man Standing” succeeded at ABC, and it’ll continue to succeed at Fox. Boy did they shoot themselves in the foot with that one…
