Ellen DeGeneres Teases President Bush About Poncho Incident During President Trump’s Inauguration

Ever since he left the White House in January of 2009, President George W. Bush has kept a low-profile, making few public appearances and consciously refusing to comment on the administration of his successor, Barack Obama.

While President Bush has lived a fairly private life since leaving office, he has become a prolific painter and is currently traveling around the country promoting a book featuring his paintings of the many Wounded Warriors he has had the opportunity to meet over the years.

Many of Bush’s television appearances promoting his book have focused on his paintings and a variety of questions about his thoughts on the current state of politics, but it was his appearance with Ellen DeGeneres that reminded us why we love the former president.

During the appearance on Wednesday, DeGeneres brought up the awkward moment during President Trump’s inauguration when Bush was captured on camera struggling to put on a poncho during a rainstorm.

DeGeneres joked that Bush “had a little bit of a problem, the poncho was a problem…It seemed…Had you put on a poncho…? Had you put one on? Is it the first time? First time putting a poncho on?

Former President Bush took the incident in stride and joked that “It looks like it.” DeGeneres then surprised Bush with a gift to help him with his future poncho needs.

It’s great that Bush is able to poke fun at himself and take his awkward poncho moment in style. Bush clearly realized that the incident went viral and became a topic of conversation on Inauguration Day.

Such little moments like this remind each and every American that despite being a former president, George W. Bush is just like you and me.
