The calls for gun control by hysterical liberals have been heard for weeks, and Florida finally relented, passing a ban on the AR-15 over the weekend. While over twice as many people are killed from falling out of bed each year than from all kinds of rifles combined (including the AR-15), the gun is always a hot topic of discussion after mass public shootings given its popularity among shooters.

Liberals are correct that it’s usually assault weapons used in mass public shootings (though there are many exceptions, such as the Virginia Tech shooting), but it’s handguns that are responsible for over 90 percent of the gun homicides in America. Do they think that one life lost in a mass public shooting by an assault rifle is equal to ten lives lost to handguns? That’s the only way I can make sense of the bizarre focus on rifles over handguns.

Nevertheless, Florida did ban the AR-15 this past weekend, after an AR-15-style weapon was used in the recent Stoneman Douglas school shooting. After hours of debate, Florida’s Senate temporarily approved a two-year ban on the purchase of AR-15 rifles in the Sunshine State.

And it lasted all of fifteen minutes.

According to The Blaze,

The moment of drama came during an unrecorded voice vote where Florida senators shouted “yea” or “nay.” Florida Senate President Joe Negron, a Republican, afterward ruled the measure had been approved. But per chamber rules, the approval could be challenged — and that’s exactly what happened.

Republicans, who generally oppose most firearm restrictions, later reconsidered the measure and held a roll call vote on it, which struck down the two-year ban. According to the Times, just 15 minutes had passed between the time the measure was initially approved to the time it was reconsidered and struck down.

The vote on the measure was 21-17, with two Republicans joining the Democrats.

Rest in Peace, Florida’s AR-15 ban (2018-2018), we hardly knew thee.
