Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) has dropped out of the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination and is set to endorse former Vice President Joe Biden later today.
Klobuchar reportedly informed her staffers today that she would be ending her campaign after her disappointing finishes in the early nomination processes, according to The Washington Examiner. She is set to fly to Dallas, Texas this afternoon to officially endorse Biden at a rally.
Known for being one of the more moderate Democrats in the race, the 59 year-old senator surprised everyone when she finished third in the New Hampshire primary last month. However, she was not able to capitalize on this momentum and did not end up performing well in Nevada or in South Carolina this past weekend.
After entering the race, Klobuchar found herself in hot water when it was reported that she had been abusive towards her staffers, and she responded by admitting that she had been “tough” on them at times.
“I have, I’d say, high expectations for myself. I have high expectations for the people that work for me, but I have high expectations for this country. And that’s what we need,” she said, according to NBC News. “We need someone who is focused on getting things done for the country.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) spokesman Faiz Shakir released a brief statement reacting to news that Klobuchar would be endorsing Biden.
“Anyone who thinks Biden would be a better candidate than Bernie against Trump hasn’t been watching the 10 Democratic debates,” he said. “Biden doesn’t have the record, vision, excitement, coalition that Bernie does. We need to do more than just defeat Trump. We need progressive change.”
This comes one day after billionaire Tom Steyer and former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg both dropped out of the Democratic presidential race. With the field narrowing, it’s looking like it will be Sanders or Biden who takes on Donald Trump in November.
It remains to be seen whether either of them will get anywhere against the president.
