Trump Admin Sets Up Quotas For Immigration Judges To Speed Up Deportations

In an attempt to combat a high level of court backlogs, the Trump administration is implementing quotas for federal immigration judges to help speed up the deportation of illegal immigrants.

According to one Justice Department official, the performance metrics are “designed to increase productivity and efficiency in the system without compromising due process.”

On Tuesday, President Trump railed against a system that bogs down these cases through “a whole big wasted procedure,” taking a shot at his predecessor in the process by labeling it an “Obama joke.”

“As ridiculous as it sounds, the laws of our country do not easily allow us to send those crossing our Southern Border back where they came from,” the President wrote on social media. “A whole big wasted procedure must take place. Mexico & Canada have tough immigration laws, whereas ours are an Obama joke.”

He demanded action on the matter from Congress.

Officials indicate that the quota will require immigration judges to complete 700 cases annually to yield a satisfactory grade. Current averages have them at 678 cases per year.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has previously called for methods to increase the speed on cases which have resulted in a backlog of over 650,00 cases according to some reports.

Nancy Morawetz, who teaches at the Immigrant Rights Clinic at New York University School of Law, recently described Sessions’ goals on speeding up deportations in the judicial system.

“What he wants is an immigration court system which is rapid, and leads to lots of deportations,” Morawetz said.

Naturally, liberals have railed against speeding up cases while maintaining due process as ‘evil.’

In December, Sessions indicated that such performance measures would aid in “the efficient and timely completion of cases and motions” while maintaining fairness.
