Thomas Homan, the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, spoke at the Border Security Expo in San Antonio yesterday, delivering a fiery speech on border security and illegal immigration.
Early in the speech, he blasted the DACA bill being presented before Congress that grants 1.8 million DACA-eligible immigrants amnesty in return for an end to chain migration and the diversity-visa program.
According to Fox News, he said
“If we get a clean DACA bill, shame on all of us. You can’t address DACA and reward people that brought children here illegally and not address underlying reasons of DACA.”
Homan, who said that he “100 percent support[s] the wall,” added that he is “sick and tired of the vilification of the men and women of ICE and the Border Patrol,” according to multiple accounts of his speech.
“If you violate the laws of this country, if you enter illegally, which is a crime, it’s not going to be OK anymore,” Horman said.
Sanctuary cities, Homan charged, endanger federal officers because they often force agents to make arrests in homes and workplaces – rather than controlled environments, like state jails.
In total, the speech lasted 40 minutes, and it couldn’t reflect a bigger shift from passive attitude towards illegal immigration from the Obama Administration. From Jan. 22 to Sept. 9, law enforcement deported nearly 54,000 illegal immigrants from the U.S. (as opposed to on the U.S.-Mexico border), a 34 percent increase over the same period last year, and said that they expect the numbers to climb.
Overall, ICE arrests of illegal immigrants have nearly doubled over the year, and have risen 83 percent for MS-13 gang members as the Trump Administration continues to crack down on one of the nation’s deadliest gangs, composed almost entirely of illegal immigrants.
