As if the president’s defense team wasn’t an all-star lineup already, he just added several members of Congress.

Most of them distinguished themselves at the House impeachment hearings.

The new members of Team Trump announced their inclusion Monday night.

The new roster will include:

• Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia- As ranking GOP member during the formal House impeachment hearing Collins was relentless and passionate in the president’s defense and in shredding Dem arguments. He’ll likely be at that vocation again. He’s also auditioning for a 2022 Senate primary in Georgia.

 

• Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio- The GOP MVP of both hearings, he ran over opposing committee chairman with his aggressive questioning and his everyday American manner. He’s a bulldog and promises to keep up the pressure on Dems at the Senate trial.

 

• Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina- A close friend of Jordan’s and a fellow member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, Meadows makes sure that the solid right is represented at the table.

 

• Rep. John Ratcliffe of Texas- The Texan pulled no punches at House impeachment hearings and his forceful delivery ruined the day of opposing Dems and their witnesses.

 

• Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York- Another star of the impeachment hearings, Stefanik time and time again challenged the chairmen and made them try to gavel her down. But she was irrepressible and made a national name for herself.

 

• Also coming on board is Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York, Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana, and Rep. Debbie Lesko of Arizona.

 

All are, of course, Republicans.

The above will likely not be presenting the case on the floor of the Senate.

They will be acting as an ancillary resource because of their previous knowledge of the issues at hand gained at the prior hearings.

You could call them a strong bunch of defensive coaches for Team Trump.

The newly minted members from Congress also must be aware of the career progression of former GOP Rep. Trent Lott of Mississippi.

He served as a member of the House Judiciary Committee in the 1974 Watergate hearing on the impeachment of President Richard Nixon.

Lott’s fame after the scandal propelled him to the Senate and eventually to GOP Senate Majority Leader.

That kind of future office will be on the minds of Jordan, Stefanik, etc., as their counsel helps defend the president and pummel the Dems during the trial.
