Rep. Trey Gowdy made waves over the weekend when he completely blew up the Democrat line on Trump and Russia.
For months, we’ve heard nothing from the liberal press other than that Trump is soft on Russia, and is letting Vladimir Putin get his way in international affairs. We’ve also been told that Russia is working fervently to undermine American democracy while Trump fiddles with his thumbs and plays on Twitter.
Well, Gowdy put that narrative up against the wall and plugged it full of rhetorical bullets. Here’s what he said on Fox News Sunday when asked about Trump’s response to Russia:
“I think he’s done a hell of a lot better job than President Obama did. It wasn’t Donald Trump who laughed when Mitt Romney said Russia was our number one geopolitical enemy and it wasn’t President Trump who handed that awkward reset button to the Russians and it wasn’t President Trump who said on a hot mic, ‘I’ll have more flexibility in the second term.’ All of that was Obama.”
Whoa. Did you just hear that loud “KA-BOOM”? That was Gowdy dropping a mic right on Obama’s head.

It is unquestionable that Trump has taken a tougher line on Russia than Obama ever did.
First of all, Obama let Russia meddle in the 2016 election. The Kremlin hired a bunch of computer nerds who used fake identities to purchase Facebook ads that were promoted to sow discord in our politics, and included both pro-Trump and anti-Trump messages. The Obama Administration willfully held off on doing anything significant to stop Russia.
Second, the Trump Administration just imposed financial sanctions on a host of Russia-related organizations and individuals in response to their election shenanigans. Again, Obama did jack-diddly-squat about Russia’s role in the 2016 election.
Third, back in December, the Trump Administration approved of the sale of lethal weaponry to Ukrainian rebels who are currently fighting Russian forces in the eastern part of the country. Obama blocked these sales, which were approved by Congress, while he was the President.
While Obama was playing a fun game of footsie with Putin, letting the thuggish president waltz into eastern Ukraine and seize part of the land, Trump was still a private citizen. He’s certainly not to blame for the Obama Administration tripping over itself trying to retroactively justify its non-action.
Gowdy is right. Trump has been far tougher on Russia than Obama ever was.
