Trends Show More And More Hispanics Are Moving To GOP: ‘Biden Turned Me Into A Republican’

When Republican Glenn Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the Virginia governor’s race this month, many pollsters and others noted that GOP was picking up more Hispanic votes.

Many also wondered what this trend could mean for Democrats in 2022 and 2024.

Hispanic Youngkin Supporter Juan Perez: ‘I believe that Biden turned me into a Republican’

Some Hispanics have also been brutally honest about why they have changed politically.

After the Virginian election, Telemundo News asked Hispanic voter and Youngkin supporter Juan Pérez why he voted Republican.

Perez did not hold back and his comments appeared to reveal that he had been a Democrat prior.

“I believe that Biden turned me into a Republican,” Pérez said. “Biden is destroying the economy. Inflation is through the roof and everything is terrible.”

Similarly, Donald Trump made huge gains with Hispanic voters in 2020. Vox reported in May, “The newest and most detailed data yet shows that the trend was nationwide. According to a recent report by the Democratic data firm Catalist, the number of Latinos who cast votes increased by 31 percent from 2016 to 2020, accounting for a 10th of the electorate.”

“A comfortable majority of Latinos — an estimated 61 percent — supported President Joe Biden, but there was about an 8 percentage-point swing toward Trump, based on data on votes cast for either the Democratic or Republican nominees in 2016 and 2020,” Vox noted.

Vox emphasized how Democrats increasingly can’t rely on the notion that if Hispanics show up on election day they will vote for their party.

“The data shows that many Latino voters, who represent the fastest-growing share of the electorate, are not firmly part of the Democratic base,” Vox noted.

“Instead, they seem to be persuadable voters, presenting a potential opportunity for both Democrats and Republicans,” Vox continued. “This is especially true for voters who aren’t hyperpartisan: new and infrequent voters, as well as people who flipped their votes in 2020 or who decided to sit the election out entirely.”

The Political Insider noted this trend is especially pronounced near the southern border in Texas, with Hispanic former-Democrats changing parties and even running for office.

Telemundo interviewed another Hispanic voter who supported Youngkin.

Astrid Gamaz told the news outlet that not involved in politics prior to the recent Virginia election but some factors had convinced her to support Youngkin.

“I believe that Republicans now, especially we minorities, have stood up because I’m sick of people stigmatizing me (for being) a Republican and me being expected not to speak up,” Gamaz told Telemundo.

Pollster Eduardo Gamarra recently told Politico, “I can tell you from my research that what we have been seeing is a real message for the Democrats, who are not getting behind issues that really speak to Latinos.”

“It’s a reason we’re seeing the shift,” he observed.

The Democrats’ woes aren’t limited to Hispanics, either.
