On Sunday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott vowed that he would hire the Border Patrol agents on horseback accused of ‘whipping’ Haitian migrants if the Biden administration fires them.
Abbott also had words for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for failing to secure the southern border.
The Texas Governor’s fiery comments came during an interview on “Fox News Sunday” with Chris Wallace.
“Secretary Mayorkas and, if I can be candid, even President Biden, they are in dereliction of duty,” Abbott said.
Abbott continued, “The Biden administration has abandoned any pretense of securing the sovereignty of either Texas or the United States by having these open border policies.”
“The people in south Texas, they are angry about the Biden administration for ignoring, for abandoning them,” the governor said. “The Biden administration cares far more for the people who are not in this country than he does for the people, American citizens who live in this country.”
The ongoing border crisis has especially affected the state of Texas. Over the last week, thousands of Haitian migrants crossed into the Lone Star state.
Last week, images of border patrol on horseback stopping Haitian migrants from entering the U.S. caused controversy, as it was originally reported that the agents were using “whips.”
Officials later clarified the agents were using long reins to control their horses. The agents twirling their reins to move the horse ahead is apparently what some had mistaken for whips.
Nevertheless, two agents who had been accused of “whipping” the illegal immigrants were put on administrative duty.
Regardless, Biden said the agents will “pay” depending on what the investigation into the matter finds.
“To see people like they did, with horses, running them over, people being strapped, it’s outrageous,” Biden said. “I promise you, those people will pay. There is an investigation underway right now and there will be consequences.”
The president’s treatment of the agents angered Abbott.
“What the president said going after the Border Patrol who were risking their lives, working so hard to try to secure the border,” Abbott said.
“If he takes any action against them whatsoever — I have worked side by side with those border patrol agents — I want them to know something,” Abbott continued.
“If they are at risk of losing their job by a president who is abandoning his duty to secure the border, you have a job in the state of Texas,” the governor promised.
He added, “I will hire you to help Texas secure the border.”
