Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer sat down with The Political Insider earlier today to discuss his new book “The Briefing.” Spicer’s tell-all book gives a glimpse inside the inner workings of the Trump White House during its early days, minus the kind of fiction you’d find in Omarosa’s.
Noting that Trump has been in the media spotlight for 30 years, James Miller asked Spicer what Trump is like behind the scenes. “What you see is what you get for the most part,” Spicer said. “There’s a wide range. He can be caring, he can be empathetic. When things aren’t going well, he definitely expresses [inaudible]. With Trump, you always know where you stand.”
Spicer’s book contains a number of anecdotes about his time with the President, and Miller highlighted his favorite. It had to do with an appearance that President Trump was set to make on St. Patrick’s Day – when Spicer and Trump realized that he lacked a green tie. Trump was scheduled to meet with the Irish prime minister for a tradition that started with Reagan.
Spicer ended up bringing a spare tie to Trump and was told to leave it on his desk. What Trump didn’t know is that it was one of Spicer’s own ties. “So there I am leaving this green tie I brought from home on the President’s desk. And for me… I grew up very working class… and here I am leaving a tie on the President’s desk in the Oval Office of the White House for the POTUS, a billionaire… it was just truly one of those surreal moments for me.”
“And you mentioned at the close of the anecdote that you never got the tie back,” Miller said.
Spicer, laughing, replied “No. I mean, it’s difficult to walk up to the President and say ‘uh, where’s that tie.’ But it was fascinating to watch him put it on, and see it [my tie] on television.”
