The New York Post reports that “dozens” of NYPD officers are leaving the city in part due to a pervasive “anti-cop climate.”
The report indicates that many of the roughly 50 officers have sought work in Long Island’s Nassau County Police Department.
“They are going to a department where they will be better appreciated by their community, local politicians and district attorneys who still value the job they do protecting innocent people and property over criminals,” one source told the newspaper.
In July, the NYPD saw an uptick in the number of officers retiring due in part to a lack of respect and the loss of overtime pay.
The retirements were taking place at such a significant rate the department had to limit the number of applications.
The Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, which represents over 50,000 active and retired New York City Police Officers, tweeted that the decisions of experienced men and women on the force to leave might be linked to some loss of wages.
“We continue to lose trained, experienced [officers] to other [departments] where they can earn 70% more,” the PBA tweeted.
“It’s yet another sign that NYC pols don’t care about improving policing,” they added. “What they want is fewer cops on streets [and] their refusal to pay us is getting them exactly that.”
This past July, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced he had cut $1 billion from the NYPD budget.
No wonder officers are now leaving for greener pastures.
New York socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez complained that the amount deprived to the NYPD wasn’t enough.
“Defunding the police means defunding police,” she said, “It does not mean budget tricks or funny math.”

While police officers in New York City are retiring or leaving in droves, analysts have reported that murders in October were up by 33 percent and the number of victims shot has doubled.
In December, ABC 7 revealed that shootings had “surge(d) to levels not seen in years.”
Minneapolis has struggled with similar spikes in violent crimes as their city council has worked diligently to ravage their police department’s budget.
Last week the Minneapolis City Council voted to move nearly $8 million from the department’s budget even as homicide rates have soared and residents are left wondering if officers are available to answer their emergency calls.
How many cities like Minneapolis or New York are going to watch their men and women in blue be denigrated to the point of leaving, only to watch crime rates go up and the people become less safe?
