In a bizarre and disturbing message late Tuesday night, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is already under public scrutiny, warned Jewish New Yorkers to stop gathering due to coronavirus guidelines.

Not taking into account the Constitution and its principles regarding religious liberties, de Blasio seems to think he’s the high court of New York, making up legislation and throwing away constitutional rights at his whim.

He also clearly didn’t take into account the history of anti-Semitism and the dangerous language he used that sounded rather, to put it mildly, authoritarian.

In his typical foot-in-mouth fashion, Mayor de Blasio tried to patch things up in a second, related message on his Twitter account that missed the mark, trying to spin his horrible remarks into a battle-cry to save lives:

Let me make this clear. For de Blasio, this is not about saving lives, this is about being in control. The NYC mayor heard that a group of people (he mustn’t respect very much) were gathering for a funeral and he got angry. How dare they not obey me! Democrats love a good crisis when it gives them power.

A real leader could have taken action to disperse the crowd if necessary, and could have easily done so with a shred of decency and respect. Grocery stores are full. How about we have a logical, science-based discussion about religious gatherings, funerals, and other important services. 

As political commentator and talk show host Dave Rubin aptly puts it, de Blasio is a lunatic:

Mayor Bill de Blasio would do himself a favor to leave the hissy fits off of Twitter.
