North Korea Summit With President Trump Canceled

This is a serious blow to President Trump’s agenda.

The planned peace summit with North Korea has been canceled. The breaking news was first reported after the White House released a letter. Axios has the scoop:

President Trump announced the cancellation of his scheduled June 12 summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in a letter released this morning by the White House.

This is a disappointment but it doesn’t come as a surprise. While the U.S., including the Trump Administration, has been open and optimistic about the meeting, the North Korean regime has been frantic and unpredictable with its language.

This has led to a lot of uncertainty before the high stakes negotiation. When you’re trying to convince a dictatorial regime to lose its most powerful weapons, which double as its most potent bargaining chip, you can’t recklessly use language just before the big day.

But that’s exactly what North Korea did. (RELATED: North Korea Threatens to Cancel Peace Summit Over U.S. Military Drills).

So while the June 12th meeting has been canceled, there’s still hope it could be rescheduled. Clues in recent days suggest President Trump is willing to be flexible.

Trump suggested two days ago the meeting could be delayed. (RELATED: Trump Says North Korea Meeting Might Be Delayed). And just this morning, Trump said on “Fox & Friends” that the meeting may be delayed to another time:

We know how much this peace summit means to President Trump. He isn’t likely to let go of it. But for now, the meeting in Singapore is canceled.
