New Proposal Would Make Sanctuary City Politicians Legally Liable for Crimes Committed by Illegal Aliens

Liberal mayors nationwide are getting a wake up call, learning that this is no longer the Obama era where they get to pick and choose which federal laws they want to obey.

Donald Trump made the issue of immigration the foundation of his campaign, focusing mainly on building a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border (that’s a century overdue,) deporting criminal illegal aliens, and ending sanctuary cities.

Some of these liberal cities take the “sanctuary” policy to the absolute extreme. New York City mayor Bill de Blasio said with a straight face on CNN that he wouldn’t have an illegal alien deported for “minor” crimes like drunk driving, for example.

The mayors of a number of sanctuary cities (de Blasio included) have proclaimed they will remain in defiance of federal law, while Trump in response has threatened to cut off the federal funds those cities receive. Seven billion dollars are on the line for NYC alone, and at least one mayor has caved thus far (Miami’s) and ended their city’s sanctuary status, fearing lost federal funds.

But Trump isn’t the only one turning up the heat on sanctuary cities. While mayors of those cities are scrambling to keep their sanctuary status, other lawmakers are looking for ways to actually enforce the law.

A Republican state lawmaker on Monday announced a bill that would allow victims of certain crimes committed by immigrants in the country illegally to sue politicians who refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

The proposal, which has not yet been introduced, targets so-called “sanctuary cities” like Denver, Boulder and Aurora, where police and other officials have said they won’t enforce federal immigration laws.

“It’s beyond any reasonable thought as to why the Democrats, along with (Denver Mayor Michael Hancock), would continue to not only act outside the law, which they swore to uphold, but also enjoy immunity from their reckless decision to place Coloradans in danger because of the sanctuary city policies that they created and continue to implement,” Rep. Dave Williams, R-Colorado Springs, said in a news release announcing the bill.

To that I say: why not support this policy? How is this any different than suing for gross negligence – which is what cities are committing when they become sanctuaries for those who break America’s laws with impunity? There are 20 Americans killed by unlicensed drivers each day (7,500 a year), and at least half of them are expected to be illegal aliens. In some states, illegal aliens account for upwards of 30 percent of the murders committed there. When is enough, enough?

America should be a sanctuary for its citizens – not its criminals.
