On Tuesday, Nancy Pelosi cheered anti-Trump House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney – who the House Speaker mistakenly called “Lynne Cheney” – for her “courage” and “patriotism.”
Cheney is currently facing heavy backlash for her criticism of former President Donald Trump.
Pelosi said, “I do commend Lynne Cheney for her courage, for her patriotism.”
For the record, Lynne Cheney is wife of former Vice President Dick Cheney and is also Congresswoman Liz Cheney’s mother.
“I wish her well,” Pelosi added. “Perhaps this challenge will make her stronger. I don’t know, that’s up to her caucus.”
“I don’t welcome their participation in our caucus and I’m sure they don’t welcome my participation in theirs.”
The Political Insider reported on Tuesday that Cheney is in serious danger of losing her leadership position.
“New reports indicate that anti-Trump Representative Liz Cheney, the number three Republican in the House, could be ousted from her leadership role before the end of the month,” TPI reported.
According to The Hill, influential allies of House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy are looking to remove Cheney.
“There is no way that Liz will be conference chair by month’s end,” one person close to McCarthy reportedly said. “When there is a vote, it won’t be a long conference; it will be fast. Everyone knows the outcome.”
A second ally labeled her as “a liability” and suggested it isn’t just far-supporters of former President Donald Trump who want to see her removed.
“This is a broad range of lawmakers who have had it with her,” they claimed. “She’s a liability, and McCarthy’s as fed up as the rest of us that she is focused on the past rather than winning back the House.”
