Gas tank low and you’re not sure if you have an extra $20 to put into it? Grocery bill got you bummed? Maybe you’re even thinking about skipping breakfast because your wallet is stretched too thin and you can’t even afford the generic Raisin Bran.

No matter. None of these things are important. Or, at least they’re not as important as funding Ukraine’s war effort. So says Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

In an interview with Fox News host Dana Perino, the Kentucky Republican responded to reports that Ukraine is “burning through ammunition faster than the US and NATO can produce them.”

“What is Biden’s responsibility in trying to make sure that people in America – whose support for Ukraine is softening – will want to continue to try to help them?” Perino asked.

McConnell responded: “Well, I’m going to try to help explain to the American people that defeating the Russians in Ukraine is the single most important event going on in the world right now.”

McConnell: Ukraine is the Most Important Thing

Senator Mitch McConnell argued that despite the many billions of taxpayer dollars that have already gone to Ukraine, the investment will actually “save us enormous money down the road if the Ukrainians can succeed.”

That’s a big if.

Plus, he added, they’re only asking for money, not personnel, and it’s a relatively small amount – about 0.2% of our gross domestic product. Oh, and “the Europeans are stepping up” so we should too, apparently.

“There should be bipartisan support for this,” he insists.

Meanwhile, there is a massive toxic chemical disaster affecting East Palestine, Ohio right now, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) turned down a request for disaster relief.

Shrugs off Poll Showing Americans Are Tiring of Helping Ukraine

In the interview, McConnell shrugged off public opinion suggesting the American people are growing weary of financing Ukraine’s war effort.

A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows just 37% are in favor of sending taxpayer dollars to Ukraine, while 38% are opposed. Another 23% say they are neither in favor or opposed.

“I’m sorry public opinion is sliding, but I want to reassure the American people that this is enormously important,” McConnell reassured.

“We need to stay together on a bipartisan basis in our country and defend these people who are bravely fighting for freedom and for democracy in Ukraine,” he continued.

The comments come as no surprise, as McConnell echoed sentiments that Ukraine is the most important thing going back in May.

“I think we all agree the most important thing going on in the world right now is the war in Ukraine,” he told reporters at the time.

The latest public polling indicates Americans view the economy, immigration, and crime as the most important priorities to address. But that’s just in their world.

And that doesn’t matter to Mitch McConnell. He’ll help you understand that soon enough.
