Michelle Obama said that when her family moved to Chicago’s south side there was a “white flight,” an attitude that persists to this day in response to immigrants.
The former First Lady made her comments at an Obama Foundation Summit, held at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago on Tuesday.
“We were doing everything we were supposed to do – and better,” Obama said regarding her family at that time. “But when we moved in, white families moved out.”
“I want to remind white folks that y’all were running from us,” she then accused. “And you’re still running.”
“Because we’re no different from the immigrant families that are moving in today.”
Recent studies do indeed suggest that “white flight” is a phenomenon that persists to this day, though attributing it to the sole factor of ethnicity seems to be a bit of tunnel vision.
In fact, Newsweek in 2018 published a column that explained: “Since the ’70s, blacks have been fleeing some cities at higher rates than whites.”

Blames Whites For The Community Falling Apart
Remarkably, Michelle Obama suggested it was this notion of ‘white flight’ that caused the south side of Chicago to fall apart, not the infinitely more provable fact that cities wholly controlled by Democrats turn into veritable wastelands.

Which, if one projects off of that, seems to suggest the minority families left behind contributed to the gang violence in Chicago. But she couldn’t have meant that since it’d be a racist thing to say.

Obama then launched into a diatribe in which she lamented that she can’t figure out what to do to make white people less afraid of the black community.

As one-half of the first black occupants of the White House, she then complained that her entire life has been littered with racism.
“As people doubted us coming through — ‘Are you Princeton material? Can you really make the grade?’ Can you cut it?’ — What do you do in those instances?” Obama questioned. “All you can do is put your head down and do the work and let the work, your truth, speak for itself.”
Michelle noted that the only way to combat racism is to continue presenting herself as the “good human” who does “wonderful things” that she is.
“Maybe if I show up every day as a human, a good human, doing wonderful things, loving my family, loving our kids, taking care of things that I care about — maybe, just maybe that work will pick away at the scabs of our discrimination,” she sighed. “Maybe that will slowly unravel it.”
Or, you know, maybe stop blaming every little thing that happened in your life on racism. That might help.

Gee wiz, while being a package delivery driver in certain subdivisions with $300.000 homes, HUD threw in a few smaller scattered site housing units. I noticed all of the homes near the Hud homes had notes on their doors that said ‘ All delivery drivers absolutely do not leave any packages by the front or rear doors if no one answers’. Coincidence? I think not. The HUD houses usually had torn window screens, dog chains wrapped around the chewed up front porch columns, dog feces covering the walk and ground leading to the front door, un-shoveled walk in the winter and in the summer foot high grass. This is what makes the long time white residents move out. They don’t want to live in high crime slum area. I have many minority friends and I am far from being a bigot. The best man at my wedding was a wonderful man from Nigeria and I have had and still do have many friends in the black community, also, I have four adopted sons from Vietnam. The only group that I am biased against are gays, NOT because I am homophobic which means “fear of mankind”, but because homosexuals, lesbians, transgenders, etc, are not only sinning against nature and against God Himself. But getting back to your statement, when many uneducated or low educated minorities, Blacks, Hispanics, etc, move into what was or is a predominately white neighborhood, they always tend to bring the worst of their culture with them. Why is it that within a short period of time, the neighborhood looks like a slum with garbage all over, unkempt lawns, loud noise and music late into the night, and a rise in crime rates? I have seen perfectly good neighborhoods deteriorate like this, many times over. NO, it was not the fault of the landlords, the so-called ‘slum lords’. They rent the properties to make money, but when they have to keep spending money to replace appliances, broken windows, damaged siding, and all of the other repairs inside and outside, over and over again, after a while, they are no longer making money, they are losing huge sums of money, so they just give up.
For a person who has been educated at Harvard; wrote/co-wrote five books, First Lady of the United States; now, lives in an all “white” rich neighborhood; has her own person body guards for life. Yeah, I can see why she feels left out of the good life and hatred for white folks. I grew up 10 blocks from when she lived in Chicago. We moved out in 1964, the same year her family moved in. Great area then, could walk everywhere. Lots of stores, shops and the Avalon theater on 79th st. People didn’t move because of black people, they moved because of the loss of market values of their homes when it becomes a predominantly low income area. The media at the time claimed ‘studies show’ no loss of value to homes and all who moved were being just RACISTS!
Well, I don’t know about that. We have many mixed neighborhoods here in the south now. That used to happen quite a bit but it is too expensive to move these days. I do know that once we had blacks move into our neighborhood and HUD moved in our property values went down drastically. My property taxes have been cut in half and while that would normally be a good thing it just means the value of my property isn’t very high. I know that should not happen but if you look at all black neighborhoods you will see neglected properties and boarded up houses. At least around here. Not all of them but a good bit of them.

I grew up in the fifties in a very poor neighborhood. But everyone owned their small homes. They kept their yards mowed and the flowers blooming and weeded. Those little homes got new paint every couple of years. I drove by there a while back and the homes are all slums now. Haven’t been painted in decades. Roofs are a mix of different colored shingles or blue tarps. The grass lawns are mostly gone and no flowers are blooming there now. You don’t see kids playing outside in that area and I would worry about being shot simply for driving down the streets there. I don’t know that this is a case of white flight or simply older people passing away and blacks buying those homes and letting them fall apart because they don’t care about the homes or neighborhood. If you want to argue go to a subsidized housing area and count how many doors and windows you can see that still have the screens on them. See how many small children are out playing with no adult supervision.

That is why they are leaving.
But when you or I point this out, we are condemned as being racist. Could what happens to these neighborhoods when blacks move in be one reason why white southerners were so against desegregation . . . ?

As I and other readers pointed out earlier today on another site, we “whites are running” because of what happens in these nice once-white areas when blacks move in. Crime rates go up. Houses get run down. Property values drop. Blacks make up 13% of the population, but account for 85% of the crime. If more affluent blacks are living there, they move out as well.

Such was the case in Dallas Texas when a judge Buckmeyer tried to put a low income housing complex in a neighborhood with $250,000 and up homes! There was a number of the residents very adamant about keeping this out. Oh, by the way, there was a substantial number of the residents who were black. They said they worked hard to leave the crime and undesirables behind and they did not want to live there again! The low income housing was defeated.
