The liberal California Senator Dianne Feinstein died on Friday at the age of 90. Now, rumors are swirling that Meghan Markle, the wife of Prince Harry, is considering running for her Senate seat.

Markle May Run For Feinstein’s Senate Seat

Within minutes of Feinstein’s death, sources told Daily Mail that “phones lit up” with speculation that Markle would throw her hat in the ring to serve out the 13 months that are left in Feinstein’s Senate term.

One major Democratic donor that is close to Governor Gavin Newsom, who will be choosing Feinstein’s replacement, said that “Meghan is definitely a long-shot but in the craziness that is U.S. politics these days it’s not an impossibility. Crazier things have happened.”

Another source close to Newsom claimed that he had pledged to replace Feinstein with a black woman. Markle is mixed race, as she has a white father and a black mother.

“The problem he now faces is that all the best candidates have already announced they will be running for Feinstein’s seat in November 2024, the next election,” this insider said. “Governor Newsom cannot elect any of those candidates to the position now as it would be seen as a huge, and very unfair, advantage.”

“If he puts any of the very good black women candidates in the job now he will be accused of favoritism,” the source added. “So he needs to find a woman of color who can do the job for 13 months and will agree to not stand against any of the seasoned politicians who have already thrown their hats into the ring. There are not that many women who fit the bill. Which is why Meghan’s name is being bandied about.”

Markle And Gloria Steinem

Since moving back to California with Harry in 2020, Markle has been making connections with such leftwing power players as the radical feminist Gloria Steinem.

“Gloria has been introducing Meghan to pivotal people within the party,” one friend of Steinem’s said. “Meghan is interested in politics more than anything else. That’s where she believes her power is but she has had to focus on making money.”

Unfortunately for Markle, however, the “buzz” surrounding her when it comes to Feinstein’s Senate seat has left some Democrats feeling cold.

“I don’t think you can take Meghan seriously,” one insider said.

Markle’s Political History

Though Markle stayed quiet about politics during her time as an official member of the British royal family, she was openly critical of Trump prior to her marriage to Harry, and she endorsed Hillary Clinton publicly during the 2016 presidential election.

“Yes, of course, Trump is divisive, think about female voters alone, right?” Markle said in a 2016 interview with talk show host Larry Wilmore. “I think it was in 2012 the Republican Party lost the female vote by 12 points; that is a huge number and with as misogynistic as Trump is, and so vocal about it, that is a huge chunk of it.”

“You’re not just voting for a woman if it’s Hillary because she’s a woman, but certainly because Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting,” she continued.

It remains to be seen if Markle will actually run for Feinstein’s Senate seat.
