Ilhan Omar Slams Democrat Critics Of ‘Defund The Police,’ Claims They Don’t Care About The ‘Vulnerable’

On Tuesday, far-left Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar blasted fellow Democrats who have pushed back against “defund the police.”

The party has tried to tamp down on the politically-damaging slogan, though some far-left members like Omar and fellow ‘Squad’ member Cori Bush have insisted on still pushing for it.

Omar made her remarks during an interview on the Peacock TV channel The Choice’s “Mehdi Hasan Show.”

Omar slams Democrats critical of ‘defund the police’ movement

Some Democrats have even gone as far as cheering the ‘death’ of the “defund the police” slogan – like New York Congressman Ritchie Torres.

Speaking of fellow Democrat, and newly-elected Mayor of New York City Eric Adams, Torres said, “I agree with the Mayor,” Torres said. “The defund police movement is dead in New York City and good riddance.”

Not so with Omar and the far-left.

On his show, Mehdi Hasan asked Omar, “And how do you feel when you see even self-proclaimed progressives in your party like New York Congressman Ritchie Torres saying that “defund the police” is dead in New York City and where many Democrats, including the new mayor, a former police captain, are loudly distancing themselves from the defund movement?”

Omar replied, “When you see the rise in mental health crises, when you’re seeing domestic violence increase because of COVID and other measures, when you see so many people with addiction problems, and you see the level of homelessness we have in our communities, and you still say more resources shouldn’t be allocated to that, to keep our communities safe and healthy, I really don’t know what your point is in saying that you represent the most vulnerable in our communities.”

“Because if you care about those who are vulnerable, then you have to do everything that you can to keep them safe,” she added.

This is not the first time Omar has pointed fingers at those in her own party for being critical about the “defund the police” movement.

Omar Hit Obama’s Critical Comments

Late last year, former President Barack Obama said in an interview, “I guess you can use a snappy slogan like ‘defund the police,’ but, you know, you lost a big audience the minute you say it, which makes it a lot less likely that you’re actually going to get the changes you want done.”

Omar replied, “We lose people in the hands of police.”

“It’s not a slogan but a policy demand,” she added. “And centering the demand for equitable investments and budgets for communities across the country gets us progress and safety.”
