At least a few polls show that Bernie Sanders would be the Democrat front-runner if he were to run for President in 2020, and it’s not hard to see why given the Party’s growing affection for socialism.
In her post-election book “What Happened?” Hillary does recount the challenges of running against the Santa Claus candidate in the primaries, and how Barack Obama explicitly asked her not to attack his fantastical economic plans.
“Throughout the primaries, every-time I wanted to hit back against Bernie’s attacks, I was told to restrain myself. Noting that his plans didn’t add up, that they would inevitably mean raising taxes on middle-class families, or that they were little more than a pipe dream – all of this could be used to reinforce his argument that I wasn’t a true progressive.”
By attacking Bernie’s proposed policies of “free everything” Hillary would also be attacking much of what the Democrat base wants.
According to The Hill:
Hillary said in a Wednesday interview with Time Inc. Brands executive Alan Murray that her economic policies were “probably” a hard sell for many Democratic primary voters.
Hillary was asked “you may be the only presidential candidate since WW2 to have to stand up and say ‘I am a capitalist.’ Did it hurt you?
“Probably. It’s hard to know, but I mean if you’re in the Iowa caucuses and 41 percent of Democrats are socialists or self-described socialists, and I’m asked ‘Are you a capitalist?’ and I say, ‘Yes, but with appropriate regulation and appropriate accountability.’ You know, that probably gets lost in the ‘Oh my gosh, she’s a capitalist!’ ” Clinton said.
If just over 4 in 10 Democrats are socialists, perhaps Bernie won’t be the only socialist who makes a run in 2020.
Hillary continued with something of a defense of capitalism: “Do I consider myself part of the casino capitalist process by which so few have so much and so many have so little? By which Wall Street greed and recklessness wrecked this economy? No, I don’t. When I think about capitalism, I think about all the businesses that were started because we have the opportunity and the freedom to do that and to make a good living for themselves and their families … We would be making a grave mistake to turn our backs on what built the greatest middle class in the history.”
While this is probably the millionth excuse that Hillary has made for her loss to Donald Trump, at least she’s finally blamed the economic illiteracy of the modern Democrat voter.
