An Ice Age is coming.
Or at least that’s what experts thought in 1978. No, really – many of the leading voices of the day predicted global cooling, not warming.
They even brought out the beloved Star Trek character Spock to warn us all.
This is something actor and conservative James Woods had fun with on X recently.
It’s been 45 years since this Spock video. Does that count as a lifetime?
Dr. Roy Cardato of the John Locke Foundation commented on this now amusing video in 2013:
The really sad part of all this is that Leonard Nimoy was right. In 1978 this is what “climate experts” believed. Like today, they were blaming the weather on humans and their polluting lifestyles. And, like today, part of the problem, along with particulate matter, was the evil carbon dioxide. As one government scientist concludes according to this 1970 article in the St. Petersburg Times, “doubling CO2 in the atmosphere…would raise surface temperatures by 3.6 Fahrenheit and [here’s the kicker] cool the lower stratosphere some 27 degrees.” Holy iceberg, Batman!!!
Comedian Jim Bruer mocks the Leonard Nimoy/Spock ‘Coming Ice Age’ video in his most recent comedy special and also experts in general – for decades – giving ominous forewarnings about climate disasters.
This tweet features an Associated Press story from 1989 says nations were in danger of becoming extinct if action wasn’t taken on global warming by the year 2000.
