Dr. Fauci Says Two Masks Are Probably More Effective: It ‘Just Makes Common Sense’

President Joe Biden’s chief COVID guru, Dr. Anthony Fauci, seemed to support “double-masking” on Monday, saying that it “just makes common sense that it would likely be more effective.”

Fauci, who also served under President Donald Trump, made his comments during an appearance on NBC TODAY with anchor Savannah Guthrie.

Fauci Appears To Promote Double-Masking

Guthrie asked Fauci, “A lot of folks are hearing now about double-masking — wearing two masks or try[ing] to get one of those N95 medical-grade masks. Do you believe that’s advisable and makes a difference?”

Fauci appeared to respond approvingly. “You know, it likely does because I mean this is a physical covering to prevent droplets and virus to get in,” he replied.

Dr. Fauci continued, “So if you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on, it just makes common sense that it would likely be more effective and that’s the reason why you see people either double-masking or doing a version of an N95.”

Mask Advice Has Changed Over Time

Health officials have taken different stances on masks throughout the course of the pandemic.

Early in 2020, Fauci had said there was “no reason” to wear even one mask.

Fauci said on 60 Minutes in March, “Right now, people should not be walking, there’s no reason to be walking around with a mask.”

He also suggested at the time that wearing a mask was just about people making themselves “feel better.”

“When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is,” Fauci said.

“And often, there are unintended consequences. People keep fiddling with the mask and they keep touching their face.” he added:

From No Masks To Two Masks

Later in July, Fauci told Fox News that if most Americans would have worn masks early on, we “would be somewhat better off.”

“I mean, you acted on the information you had at the time,” Fauci said in July, trying to explain his changed position.

Joe Biden, for his part, has been pretty consistent in his plea for Americans to wear masks as a measure against the spread of COVID.

One of his first acts in office was a two-part executive order requiring masks on federal property and public transport.

The CDC currently encourages everyone aged two and older to wear masks.
