Biden Says GOP Elections Bills Greatest Threat To Democracy ‘Since The Civil War’

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden called Republicans’ election reform bills – which do things like require Voter ID and limit how many weeks people can send in absentee ballots – the greatest threat to democracy “since the Civil War” and implied that January 6 rioters were worse than Confederate soldiers.

Biden made his comments during speech at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Biden: ‘Confederates, Back Then, Never Breached The Capitol’

The president said Republicans’ election integrity bills were “an assault on democracy, an assault on liberty.”

Biden added that they were “an assault on who we are.”

“Bullies and merchants of fear, peddlers of lies, are threatening the very foundation of our country,” Biden said.

He added, “The assault on free and fair elections is not just a threat. Literally – I’ve said it before – we’re facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War.”

“That’s not hyperbole,” Biden insisted.

On the January 6 rioters, Biden said, “Confederates, back then, never breached the Capitol, as insurrectionists did on January 6.”

Biden Made Similar Remarks In April

Biden’s comments echo his speech to a joint session of Congress in April.

“Throughout our history, presidents have come into this chamber to speak to Congress, to the nation, and to the world, to declare war, to celebrate peace, to announce new plans and possibilities,” Biden said in April.

“Tonight, I come to talk about crisis and opportunity,” Biden said. “By rebuilding a nation, revitalizing our democracy, and winning the future for America, I stand here tonight one day shy of the 100th day in my administration.”

“100 days since I took the oath of office and lifted my hand off our family bible and inherited a nation. We all did, that was in crisis,” he continued.

Biden: ‘The Worst Attack On Our Democracy Since The Civil War’

He called the January 6 riot then the “worst attack” on democracy since the civil war.

“The worst pandemic in a century. The worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The worst attack on our democracy since the civil war,” Biden said.

“Now, after just 100 days, I can report to the nation America is on the move again,” the president claimed at the time.
