Democrat Dan Helmer is hoping to unseat Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock in Virginia’s 10th congressional District, but Helmer’s latest campaign ad is so terrible that he might as well concede.
The ad, called “Helmer Zone,” is inspired by a scene from the 1986 classic “Top Gun,” and it’s chock full of references from the film. Helmer – wearing a “veteran” shirt – spots Comstock at a bar and serenades her with a song about town halls to the tune of The Righteous Brothers hit “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.”
It’s so, so terrible that you have to see it to believe it.

More than 2,000 people have given the ad the “thumbs down” on YouTube, and journalists agree – this might be the worst campaign ad ever.
I’ve seen a lot of campaign ads. A lot. This might be the worst I’ve ever seen. https://t.co/gnqaKf5Aj0

This is just embarrassing. Helmer clearly doesn’t know his audience: Virginia’s 10th congressional district is home to some of the state’s wealthiest, most educated, and most informed voters. He’s not going to appeal to them by quoting “Top Gun.” As for his opponent, Comstock is a savvy politician who’s getting things done in Congress. Helmer already had his work cut out for him in a district that’s consistently voted Republican since 1980, and this goofy campaign ad will only hurt his chances even more.
Where was Helmer’s Goose to tell him this wasn’t a good idea?
