Washington Whispers: Is Mitt Romney Looking to Challenge Trump in a Primary

A flurry of criticism from Senator Mitt Romney has some speculating that he could mount a primary challenge to President Trump in 2020.

Earlier this month, Romney declared that he would not endorse any presidential candidate in the 2020 race, including Trump, in either the primary or general election.

He has since moved on to hammer the President over a transcript of a phone conversation between him and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, referring to the President’s actions as “deeply troubling.”

The former Republican candidate for President in 2016 even voiced support for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s pursuit of an impeachment inquiry.

While Romney oftentimes likes to proclaim he is the moral voice of the Republican party, propped up by a mainstream media desperate to find squishy never-Trumpers to take down the President, the uptick in activity has some people wondering if he is considering a primary challenge.

One America News Network reporter, Jack Posobiec, indicated that he had heard actual rumblings that Romney has been putting his ear to the ground with Republican donors to see if there is a market for a run.

Other Trump-haters have speculated about the possibility themselves, though they are your typical characters with their own self-interests at heart.

Bill Kristol, who heavily recruited the 15 minutes of fame joke known as Evan McMullin in 2016 to stop Trump, put up a poll on his Twitter account asking who followers thought was a more decent man – The President or Mitt Romney?

That poll went about as well as you’d expect.

Anthony Scaramucci toyed with the idea as well, ticking off a list of attributes he believes make Romney a better candidate than the “traitor.”

Meanwhile, the President has been absolutely shredding Romney on social media for aligning himself with the Democrats.

“Mitt Romney never knew how to win. He is a pompous ‘ass’ who has been fighting me from the beginning, except when he begged me for my endorsement for his Senate run …” Trump wrote.

It’s true. If America wanted a wishy-washy flip-flopper, they’d simply vote for whoever the Democrats put up for the White House.

After accepting Trump’s endorsement for Utah senator in 2018, Romney wrote a scathing op-ed indicating the President had failed to live up to the “mantle” of the presidency.

The Senator from Utah also accepted Trump’s endorsement for him in the 2012 election.

President Trump has mocked his other three Republican primary challengers as the three stooges. Is Romney willing to make it four?
