University Demands Students ‘Pledge To Practice Antiracist Behaviors’ In Disturbing BLM Endorsement

The President’s Cabinet of the University of Southern Maine just sent a message to students that swore allegiance to the Black Lives Matter movement, and they called on them to do the same.

The Cabinet, which includes President Glenn Cummings as well as other school officials, brought up late Georgia congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis’ support of the movement and proclaimed that “we must add our voices to the Black Lives Matter Movement.” The message then slammed the phrase “all lives matter” as “hurtful” and claims that it “misses the point.”

“We agree. And in support of Lewis’ declaration, the Movement itself, and Black, Indigenous and People of Color everywhere, we say Black Lives Matter. Period,” the message continued, adding that “the inconvenient truth is that history provides plenty of evidence that the lives of Black, Indigenous and People of Color haven’t mattered as much as white lives.”

The message defended this claim by ordering students to “please consider” a list of “realities.” On this list, the Cabinet alleged that “Intentionally constructed and deeply ingrained racist policies continue to deny Black, Indigenous and People of Color access to education, employment, housing, healthcare, justice and voting — and increase their chances of incarceration” as well as “Too many syllabi feature perspectives that reflect and reinforce white privilege.”

It should be noted that none of these “realities” were presented alongside specific examples, and no specific institutions were listed as being responsible for racism.

“For all of these reasons — and until we eradicate the systems of racism that harm Black, Indigenous and People of Color daily — we must never tire of declaring that Black Lives Matter,” the message stated.

The fact that “Black Lives Matter” is capitalized implies that the school is supporting the official Black Lives Matter organization, which has shown itself repeatedly to be a political organization.

Even one of the co-founders of the organization described herself and other members of the group as “trained Marxists,” a claim that is also made on the organization’s own website, where it states that Black Lives Matter aims to “disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure” and free individuals from “the tight grip of heteronormative thinking.”

No school should be endorsing Black Lives Matter, and no institution should be urging young people to do so as well. This just goes to show how dangerously radically leftwing American liberal arts schools have become.
