Data Shows Trump’s Wall Would Pay For Itself By Cutting Welfare To Illegals

According to federal immigration data, President Donald Trump’s controversial border wall would pay for itself simply by serving its intended purpose: keeping illegal freeloaders out of the country.

Steven A. Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, told The New York Post, “The wall could pay for itself even if it only modestly reduced illegal crossings and drug smuggling.” Indeed, data from the Homeland Security Department shows that the wall would only need to prevent 12 percent of future illegal crossings in order to cover its $18 billion price tag:

Absent a wall, the Homeland Security Department forecasts an additional 1.7 million illegal crossings at the US-Mexico border over the next decade.

If a wall stopped just 200,000 of those future crossings, Camarota says, it would pay for itself in fiscal savings from welfare, public education, refundable tax credits and other benefits currently given to low-income, illegal immigrants from Mexico and Central America.

Even better, if the wall stopped 50 percent of those 1.7 million expected illegal crossings, it would save American taxpayers a whopping $64 billion – and that’s not including the billions that would be saved from reduced federal drug interdiction and border-security enforcement. Furthermore, an encouraging precedent for Trump’s wall already exists. A two-story corrugated metal fence in El Paso that was erected under the Bush administration has already curbed illegal border crossing thereby more than 89 percent. Can you imagine how much money American taxpayers would save if similar results were achieved along the entire Mexican border? It would be a staggering number.

But outside preventing illegal crossings and drug smuggling, Trump’s wall would also save Americans’ wallets by cutting welfare to illegals who receive handouts through their U.S.-born children:

“A large share of the welfare used by immigrant households is received on behalf of their US-born children,” Camarota said. “This is especially true of households headed by illegal immigrants.”

Therefore, illegal border-crossers create an average fiscal burden of more than $72,000 during their lifetimes, Camarota says. Including costs for their US-born children, the fiscal drain jumps to more than $94,000.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 62 percent of illegal-immigrant-headed households use welfare, which is more than double the rate for households headed by native-born Americans. A border wall would effectively put an end to that.

Meanwhile, it’s been estimated that the Democrats’ DREAM Act would cost Americans $26 billion in its first 10 years. So, which sounds better: a wall that could potentially save more than double that amount, or an act that would reward blatantly breaking immigration law at the expense of American taxpayers?

  • I don't get it America...illegal indicates to me that these people are here illegally. If that's so why is the government giving them benefits that legal Americans are only entitled to receive. I realize the cost is astronomical and we the people (taxpayers) can't sustain this cost. It seem that the left has been set on weakening the economy in so many ways that we become dependent on them for our needs. That's not why the revolutionary war was fought and won. Independance, the start of a new and strong nation independent of government tyranny and oppression. I'll bet the first illegals didn't get any benefits.

  • its a sad day when supposed educated cant see the trees for the forest.......so you dont think by giving free loaders billions and then eliminating freeloaders will stop spending billions.....where did you go to school?...start....1+1 =2

  • But how are all the union democrats going to keep their jobs taking care of the Welfare state of Southern California? All those DNC politicians who get cash envelopes from drug gangs to act as lookouts for drug cartels. And what about all the street cleaners in unions we fund to keep San Francisco's 20 miles of discarded drug needles and human waste clean for 30-50 million? And all those extra COs and prison construction projects and shelters so crime will pay?

  • I guess that everyone including this author forgot about the 35% tariff he wants to place on goods imported into the US from Mexico. It will make it too expensive for corporations to import goods bringing jobs back to the US, a double win-win for us!

  • Why in the hell are illegals getting Welfare in the first place ? No wonder they keep pouring into our country, Would Americans get Welfare if they crossed the border into Mexico ? Hell no they would be shot or locked up, and then shot.

  • And a 'former' friend's friend long ago (gone 'cause of his substance abuse, which I abhorred) . . . said, " . . . you don't want to get into jail in Mexico . . . the movies show it right . . ." Illegals from the US don't get 'detained' . . . it's hell-holes . . . !". And don't drink the water . . . !

  • Not only welfare, but the cost of educating them, providing health care, and the billions of dollars being sent out of the country, and the incarceration of criminal aliens.

  • Actually, that is just ONE of the ways the wall would pay for itself.
    - Illegal workers unable to work in the U.S. illegally and send money home
    - Fuller employment an higher wages in the U.S. as a result of the above, bringing in more tax dollars
    - Better negotiating position from which to re-negotiate a more fair trade deal with Mexico
    - Lower emergency response team and law enforcement bills from crimes which are NOT committed by additional arriving violent criminal illegal border crossers

Every action has consequences - the wall's consequences are good for OUR citizens, bad for people trying to illegally dip into our piggy bank.

  • Shut down the government that will do it. Get funding for the wall then be damned BUILD it. Your wasting time now it won't build it's self. TRUMP get that money now !!!!!! Don't keep talking build the wall .
