Over the past week, conservatives have been cheering the different individuals President-elect Donald J. Trump has nominated for his cabinet.
Well, there is one man being considered to lead the Department of Homeland Security that has conservatives and immigration experts concerned, Texas Congressman Michael McCaul.
Conservatives believe McCaul is a supporter of amnesty and question his voting record on border security and has been essentially endorsed for the job by current Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, whose record on immigration enforcement has been heavily criticized.
Mark Kirkorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies admits that he’s “skeptical, frankly. We need to have the most hawkish DHS secretary who’s confirmable.” The only kind words Kirkorian had for McCaul was that he would likely be better than anyone Hillary Clinton could have nominated had she won the election.
Conservative commentator Ann Coulter weighed in on the potential McCaul pick:

The six-term congressman, who coasted to re-election last month, has acknowledged his interest in the job and met with Trump this week. He told Fox News that questions about his commitment to border security are “laughable.”
But NumbersUSA, which favors lower levels of immigration and scores members of Congress, gives McCaul a C-plus lifetime grade, placing him in the bottom fifth of Republicans in the House.
“He’s not terrible. But he’s pretty mediocre, overall,” said Roy Beck, the group’s president. “The big problem is that on the issues that he would be dealing with at DHS on immigration, you know the big issues that Trump campaigned on … in the last four years, he’s really been the champion of undercutting the laws that are already on the books.”
Conservatives are hoping that this rumor isn’t true, and that Trump will actually pick someone with a strong record fighting illegal immigration!
