The Trump administration is proposing a rule change that would cut up to 3.1 million people from the food stamp program, saving taxpayers $2.5 billion annually.
The revised regulation would require people who currently receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, to undergo a separate income review to determine if they are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Currently, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials say, there are 43 states that automatically allow their residents to receive SNAP assistance if they are receiving TANF benefits.
“Some states are taking advantage of loopholes that allow people to receive the SNAP benefits who would otherwise not qualify and for which they are not entitled,” Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue revealed in a conference call.
“This proposal will save money and preserve the integrity of the program,” Perdue argued, adding that “SNAP should be a temporary safety net.”
Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) said the rule change is an attempt by the administration to “circumvent Congress and make harmful changes to nutrition assistance that have been repeatedly rejected on a bipartisan basis.”
The Trump administration has argued that a booming economy has helped lower the unemployment rate to full employment, making food stamp assistance less necessary.
When Barack Obama entered office in 2009, about 33 million Americans were enrolled in SNAP. By 2013, that number had shot up to 48 million.
Two million Americans dropped from the food stamp program during Trump’s first year as President, which at that time was the lowest point in six years.
The President announced earlier this month that “Food Stamp participation hits 10 year low,” a comment verified by left-leaning fact-checking website, Politifact.
During his State of the Union address, President Trump bragged about the roaring economy and it’s role in changing how more people are working instead of relying on food stamps.
“Wages are rising at the fastest pace if decades and growing for blue-collar workers who I promised to fight for, they’re growing faster than anyone else thought possible,” he said to uproarious applause. “Nearly five million Americans have been lifted off food stamps.”

Third generation welfare recipients, "professional leeches," should be required to
be drug tested, undergo DNA testing for their brood, cross reference the DNA results
with those with criminal records.
I have NO problem with people / families needing assistance.
Welfare / SNAP is a hand up, NOT a damned career !
MANY corner markets redeem SNAP / Welfare chits for 50 % of value, and allow
alcohol, cigarettes, 'forbidden item purchases or cash.
MANY of these $$$$ wind up back in Arabic countries, assisting Isis.

Having had the dubious pleasure to work in welfare, I would recommend cutting off her food stamps and then doing a DNA test on the kids, make her tell who the fathers were, verifying the paternity and then cutting off his testicles and freezing them until the youngest turns 21!
These people pump out a kid a year, and then demand the government support them. obummer got 48 million people on welfare. Why should America work so these low life's don't have to. This guy in the check out land has $600.00 worth of food, pays with food stamps and then pushes the cart out to his new Cadillac. That IS NOT the way it should be!
Also the ID of the person they are issued to should also be checked. As I know that people sell them
Remember the article of the man who worked for the city government who was in Walmart. The Muslim lady in front of him at the check stand he reconized as the daughter or some relative who owned a Mom & Pop corner store in his neighborhood . She was buying all kinds of bulk items Soda, Water etc. She paid with food stamps
When he got out to the parking lot he saw her & a young man loading the merchandise into her vehicle. He said to her I know you are purchasing those things for your parents store to sell with food stamps. She said mind your own business they are my food stamps

I totally agree, & have thought so for years. Ever noticed what’s in their baskets? Not only are their baskets overflowing, but the bulk of it is junk food. Pre-cooked, fried, glazed in sugery-salty sauce & calorie-dense food, & all they have to do is pop it in the microwave. These kinds of foods should not be allowed, nor should pastries, cookies, or candy. These folks are not working. They have plenty of time to cook their own meals & bake their own goodies. The only things that should be allowed for purchase with food stamps are the basics: milk, cottage cheese, cheese, flour, sugar, margarine, shortening, baking ingredients, cereal, bread, fresh fruit & vegetables, fresh hamburger meat & other inexpensive cuts of meat, potatoes, rice, beans, & pasta. They’d be much healthier, slimmer, & better able to find work if they ate right. And they’d be sitting in front of the TV a lot less if they were preparing & cooking their own meals— they might even learn a skill that could pay off in other ways as well. Also, those on food stamps should be getting food stamps— not the convenience of an EBT card, which they haven’t earned the right to have. Maybe using food stamps might make it a bit uncomfortable to use— another incentive to get a job & get off welfare & food stamps. And one more thing: we shouldn’t have to wait in line behind them; most of our baskets are rarely 1/2 full because we’re broke after paying all their expenses.
The simple truth is that honest oversight of these programs would cost democrat way too many votes and they know that they would loose their cushy legislative ride .
What really gets me is to see a cart full of junk food and ready made food in the carts of people that are on welfare.
This may sound cruel to some people but it works. When I was a young girl the government would pay for unwed mothers or mothers on welfare first 3 babies and then they would sterilize them, like I said it may sound cruel, but, it sure cut down on people using the welfare system to make money.
