Trey Gowdy Slams ‘Defund Police’ Movement As ‘Dumbest Idea’ He’s Ever Heard

Trey Gowdy slammed the currently trendy “defund police” movement by the extreme left as “the single dumbest idea I’ve ever heard.”

The former federal prosecutor and former congressman from South Carolina analyzed the left’s overreaction to the George Floyd case by attempting to dismantle police forces across the nation during an interview with Maria Bartiromo.

“Who is going to process crime scenes, arrest bad people?” Gowdy asked. “Who is going to enforce any law, child sex abuse, homicide? Who is going to do it if it’s not the police?”

Thinking like a rational person, as Gowdy is, is not going to provide answers when the thought process of extremist liberals can only operate one step at a time.

Police are bad, in their eyes, and that is the only thing they can react to. One year from now when departments are decimated from lack of funding and crime skyrockets, they’ll be singing a different tune. Or maybe they won’t?

Ridiculous Idea

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) joined Gowdy during the Bartiromo interview and concurred, insisting the demand for defunding police is “a ridiculous idea.”

“It is not an idea whose time has come,” he added. “It should never come.”

And yet, several prominent Democrats and Hollywood celebrities have called for law enforcement to be defunded.

Gowdy continued by pointing out that issues run much deeper than the horribly violent cases you see being sensationalized by the media.

“Within communities of color, the issues with law enforcement are much broader than who shoots whom,” he explained. “I mean that’s incredibly important, but it’s arrest rates, it’s sentencing disparities, it’s access to bond, it’s access to diversion programs.”

Gowdy revealed that Scott, who is black, has been stopped even in his role as Senator seven times by law enforcement.

“He was stopped from entering the Capitol even though he wears his Senate lapel pin and looks like a CPA,” Gowdy joked. “I look like a gangster and don’t wear my House lapel pin and I was never stopped.”

It’s Happening

Despite this being the dumbest idea Gowdy has ever heard – and having to deal with Democrats in the House during his career, he’s heard quite a few – the left is actually following through with it.

This past weekend, a veto-proof majority of members of the Minneapolis City Council said they want to abolish the city’s police force as they grapple with the Floyd case.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, announced they would cut roughly $150 million from the city’s police budget.

Conservative actor James Woods, a lone voice of reason in Hollywood, has suggested liberals who want to defund the police should instead “opt-out” of police protection.

If they want lawlessness, fine. The rest of us prefer to live under law and order in a civilized society.
