Cole Dotson, an 18-year-old senior at Continental High School in Continental, Ohio, saw an American flag coming dangerously close to the ground and did something most adults, let alone teenagers, wouldn’t do.
He stopped his car, got out, held the flag up away from the ground, and waited for help.
Dotson learned proper flag code and protocol in the Boy Scouts, and knew it should never hit the ground. After getting the flag up and away from the ground, he called his grandmother for help.
We look to it every time we say the Pledge of Allegiance or walk into any state, federal or local building. The American flag stands tall, shining red, white and blue, but what happens when it nearly touches the ground?
If you are 18-year-old Cole Dotson, a senior and the class president at Continental High School in Continental, Ohio, you hold on to it and wait for help.
Dotson was driving past his high school on Sunday when he noticed the American flag hovering dangerously close to the ground, so he stopped his car and held the flag, while calling his grandmother for assistance.
Out of respect for the flag it should never touch the ground or anything beneath it, according to the U.S. Flag Code.
Dotson’s grandmother, who is an employee of the school, and his mom came to his aid.
His proud mother snapped a picture of her son doing what any great American should do in seeing a flag in distress. That image has now been shared nearly 60,000 times on Facebook.
Support for Dotson’s actions has been overwhelming.
“Wish more people would have the same respect for the flag,” one follower wrote. “Somewhere we lost what the flag stands for.”
Another added, “Thank you Cole, for having respect for the flag and what it stands for.”
It should come as no surprise that this young man has already chosen a patriotic career path – He is planning to meet with Marine Corps representatives this week about joining.
May his fellow students and teenagers across the country gain inspiration from this young man’s actions, and follow his lead when it comes to love of their country.
