California police officers are once again being turned away from restaurants for the crime of trying to get a meal break. But this time, it’s not because they are the police. It’s because, wait for it, they are armed.
On Friday, three San Francisco police officers who were on duty, stopped in at a popular spot called Hilda and Jesse for a break.
According to a report from ABC affiliate KGO-7 News in San Francisco, the cops had already been seated when they were asked to leave.
Because the restaurant immediately began to be slammed on social media, Chef and co-owner Rachel Sillcocks turned to local media to explain what prompted the removal of the officers.
“It’s not about the fact that we are anti-police, it is about the fact that we do not allow weapons in our restaurant. We were uncomfortable, and we asked them to leave. It has nothing to do that they were officers. It has everything to do that they were carrying guns.”
Sillcocks also stated that the officers were more than welcome to come back and eat, just leave their guns at home.
She added, “We understand how much the police support and protect the community, we want to again reiterate the fact that this is about guns being in our space, and we don’t allow it.”
San Francisco Police Chief William Scott responded to the removal of officers from the restaurant.
“The San Francisco Police Department stands for safety with respect, even when it means respecting wishes that our officers and I find discouraging and personally disappointing. I believe the vast majority of San Franciscans welcome their police officers, who deserve to know that they are appreciated for the difficult job we ask them to do – in their uniforms – to keep our neighborhoods and businesses safe.”
The staff at Hilda and Jesse may be just a bit out of touch with their fellow San Franciscans.
Crime, especially smash-and-grab incidents are happening all over California.
After a recent crime spree through the upscale Union Square shopping district, Chief Scott and Mayor London Breed announced a crackdown on lawbreakers.
Scott said there would be a “flood” of law enforcement visible in the area, and that video camera footage was being looked at to catch suspects involved.
Even area grocery stores are putting new measures in place to deter crimes like shoplifting. An area Safeway grocery store has installed automatic gates that quickly swing shut behind customers and barriers have been added to the self-checkout areas.
It seems as if no one can escape the crime wave sweeping California. “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Dorit Kemsley was the victim of a home invasion by thieves who followed her home. And, the wife of musician Clarence Avant, 81-year old Jacqueline Avant was recently murdered in their home which is also in Beverly Hills. Trendy Melrose Avenue has become a hot spot for thieves. Skateboard shop owner Dominic DeLuca says he now carries a gun with him to his store. He says the shop has been broken into three times in two years.
But the awards for most out of touch statements come from Black Lives Matter Los Angeles founder Melinda Abdullah, who said that more crime should not equal more cops.
“We need to think about what kind of economic desperation actually creates property crime and how do we get people out of that state. How do we create livable wage jobs? How do we create affordable housing?”
It was Oprah Winfrey who, while understandably upset that a murder was committed in her community, explained in a nutshell that crime just doesn’t happen to the uber wealthy and privileged of Beverly Hills:
“The fact that this has happened, her being shot and killed in her own home, after giving, sharing and caring for 81 years has shaken the laws of the Universe. The world is upside down.”
The owners of Hilda and Jesse have since issued an apology to the officers.
Now is the time to support and share the sources you trust.
