Romney Blames Trump For Afghanistan Chaos: He Helped ‘Cause This Crisis’

On Sunday, Republican Senator Mitt Romney laid a heap of blame on Donald Trump for the chaos in Afghanistan, claiming that the former president helped “cause this crisis.”

The neoconservative Romney made his remarks on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Romney Blames Trump: ‘This Is The Result Of Very Ineffective Decisions By The Prior Administration’

The pro-war Romney slammed the Trump administration for negotiating with the Taliban during the preparation for the end of the war:

“One, the Trump administration negotiating directly with the Taliban, getting ready to invite them to Camp David, opening up a prison of 5,000 Taliban and probably ISIS-K individuals and letting them free. We don’t know whether some of them were involved in the attack that occurred. These were the decisions that led to what you’re seeing and the danger that exists at the airport. This should not have happened.”

Romney also attacked the idea that the war is ending, saying, “The Taliban and the radical violent jihadists in the world haven’t stopped fighting. They’re going to continue to fight us. The war is not over.”

Speaking specifically of the disastrous pullout under Biden, “This is the result of very ineffective decisions by the prior administration and the current administration,” Romney said. “This did not have to happen. It was preventable.”

“And let me note that’s very different than the military,” Romney continued. “Our military came in at the very last moment and has performed admirably as far as I can tell to move people out as quickly as possible.”

Romney Doubles Down In Blaming Trump Along With Biden

Romney then blamed both Trump and Biden again.

“We didn’t have to be in this rush, rush circumstance with terrorists breathing down our neck,” the GOP senator said. “It’s the responsibility of the prior administration and this administration that’s cause this crisis to be upon us and has led to what is, without question, a humanitarian and foreign policy tragedy.”

Romney has long been a staunch opponent of withdrawing U.S. troops from wars overseas, including not only in Afghanistan but also Iraq.

In May, former president Trump called Sen. Romney a “stone cold loser” after he was booed at a Republican event in his home state of Utah.
