Republicans Must Stop Agreeing To Biased Debate Moderators

It has become absurd.

Wallace Trump

The news broke Thursday morning that President Trump has refused the proposal of the Commission on Presidential Debates that the next debate be virtual, held at remote locations.

The president was smart in his actions, as he realized that in such a format a biased debate moderator could cut off the sound, and even the picture, at their whim. It could have been worse than the Wallace treatment.

Biased Debate Moderators

The president saw how biased Chris Wallace was in Cleveland and probably could only marvel at the ridiculous negative bias Vice President Mike Pence had to put up with from Susan Page in Salt Lake City on Wednesday night.

Almost every one of Page’s assumptions were based on unfactual left wing premises and her questions reflected that. Pence was almost asked, “Vice President Pence, when did you stop beating your wife? You have two minutes.”

The next debate would have been moderated by Steve Scully, a former Democrat staffer for both Biden and Ted Kennedy. In other words, a vicious Democrat partisan. And the Trump campaign agreed to his placement in the moderator’s chair. So, we must ask ourselves: Does the Trump campaign have a debate death wish?

Pence actually used Page’s bias against her and took none of her bait. The president acted differently. But why were biased moderators, their bias easily confirmed, approved by the Trump team in the first place? I really wish I could tell you.

Why Would Republicans Agree With These Moderators?

Maybe they thought Trump could turn the bias into his favor. They were wrong. Maybe the Democrats stonewalled until they got the moderators they wanted. Then Trump, as he did Thursday morning, should not have agreed to debate. And these were not judgement calls either.

Wallace has been openly antagonistic to Trump for some time, Page is the authorized biographer of Nancy Pelosi, and Scully worked for Joe Biden. How did that not immediately disqualify him?

What was the consequence of their bias? Dr. Tim Blessing of Alvernia University comments:

“I just finished reading the transcript, the entire thing. Almost every question from the moderator started not just with the statement of a problem but with the statement of a problem that fit the modern left’s idea of a problem. And that IS a problem.

Questions on climate change, Breonna Taylor, even the Middle East for God’s sake, were phrased from the left and from the point of view of Neo-Marxian theory and it colored the debate—it absolutely shaped the debate into an on-going indictment of conservatism.”

If and when another presidential debate happens the Trump campaign must renegotiate. Kristen Welker, the scheduled moderator, works for NBC.

Yup, NBC.

That network is perhaps the most biased of the lot. Its bias is so over the top as to be comical. Yet, the president’s team agreed to her. That kind of foolishness from the Trump campaign must stop.
