WATCH: Rachel Maddow Cries Over Exact Policy Obama Enforced

Rachel Maddow broke into tears on her MSNBC show last night, forcing her to end it early before she could read the Associated Press report she was supposed to close the show with.

“Trump administration officials have been sending babies and other young children,” she began, before stopping to hold back tears. “Can we put up the graphic of this?” she asks as she becomes increasingly emotional, adding: “I think I am going to have to hand this off.” The report included information from lawyers that visited shelters where the children of illegals are being held, describing playrooms full of crying, preschool age children.

Watch below:

Interestingly, this seems to be the first time that Maddow has expressed any empathy for children separated from their parents at the border. In fact, during one influx of illegals at the border, Obama had far more children in custody. As Newsweek’s Chantal De Silva noted, “Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Administration for Children and Families spokesperson Kenneth Wolfe told Newsweek on Wednesday that it had as many as 10,852 undocumented children in its custody—a significant jump from the 8,886 that were in the agency’s custody on April 29.”

But here’s the real kicker: “In fiscal year 2013, under the Barack Obama administration, the HHS Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) had as many as 25,000 unaccompanied children in its care across 80 shelters.”

The Obama administration justified their detainment policies as a “deterrent” – just like Trump is now. (RELATED: Trump’s ‘Zero Tolerance’ Immigration Policy Isn’t New – Obama Did the Same Thing).

And that makes sense, as one can reduce the risk of being separated from their child to zero by not crossing the border illegally – or claiming asylum at a U.S. consulate in Mexico, rather than at the border. So, Obama had 25,000 children in custody, while Trump had roughly 11,000. Shouldn’t Maddow have had at least twice as many tears when Obama was doing it?

Of course, she should’ve – but she didn’t. Because she doesn’t care about the children. She just pretends to, when that faux-compassion can be weaponized against a Republican.
