The President of the left-wing Human Rights Campaign, Alphonso David, is out after it was revealed he was working to help former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo respond to the accusations of sexual harassment that sunk his governorship.

The Human Rights Campaign is describes itself as envisioning “a world where every member of the LGBTQ+ family has the freedom to live their truth without fear, and with equality under the law.”

The group spent nearly $50 million in 2019.

Multiple Investigations

The group’s Executive Board voted to replace David “effective immediately,” and claims David violated his contract.

Morgan Cox and Jodie Patterson, co-chairs of the Board, said in a statement,

“This is a painful moment in our movement. While the Board’s decision is not the outcome we had ever envisioned or hoped for in terms of Mr. David’s tenure with HRC, his actions have put us in an untenable position by violating HRC’s core values, policies and mission.”

Alphonso David’s association with Andrew Cuomo prompted several investigations. The HRC retained an independent law firm to investigate David after New York Attorney General Letitia James’ report on Cuomo.

The report implicated David in helping Cuomo discredit his sexual harassment accusers.

But David isn’t going quietly.

In a statement, David says the HRC “should expect a legal challenge.” He also claims that the group “unjustly provided” notice of termination, “in order to end my fight for the integrity of the review process.”

The statement from David continued, “Despite the lack of any findings, the board co-chairs have now asked me to consider resigning, not because of any wrongdoing, but because they feel the incident has been a ‘distraction’ for the organization.”

Conflict Of Interest

At the heart of the matter is the fact that Alphonso David gave the confidential personnel file of one of Cuomo’s accusers to the media in an effort to discredit her.

As to why the President of a gay rights organization would be helping Cuomo, David had previously worked as chief counsel to Cuomo and served in his cabinet for several years.

Helping Disgraced Governor

Alphonso David was not alone in helping a disgraced Gov. Cuomo to possibly discredit women who came forward with accusations of sexual harassment.

In early August, Melissa DeRosa, a top aide to Cuomo, resigned after she was named in Attorney General James’ investigations of allegedly “leading retaliatory efforts” against one of the women who came forward with allegations against Cuomo.

DeRosa also admitted to releasing personnel records of the first accuser, former aide Lindsey Boylan, to media outlets.

Human Rights Campaign Chief Operating Officer Joni Madison will become interim president of the organization effective immediately.
