House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Thursday that House staff can now make a maximum salary of up to $199,300 a year.
Pelosi said in a letter to Democratic House members, “This important action follows steps taken over the last two Congress to make the House more inclusive, open, and representative of the full range of voices and values of our communities.”
NBC News reported, “The decision to raise the maximum annual pay rate was meant to aid in recruitment and was recommended by House Administration Committee Chair Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., Pelosi said.”
The announcement comes as inflation hits levels not seen in decades.
According to the non-partisan Congressional Research Service, in 2020 the most pay select House staff were allowed to receive was $173,900.
“The House Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress held a hearing earlier this year on ways to improve staff and retain top-tier talent,” NBC News noted.
Some readers might wonder, exactly how much does Speaker Pelosi make?
In March, USA Today reported, “A USA Today review of Pelosi’s report filed in August 2020 shows that, on the low end, Pelosi could be nearly $40 million in the hole. Her maximum net wealth could be as much as about $251 million.”
“Using the Center for Responsive Politics method of averaging the two leaves a net worth of about $106 million,” USA Today noted.
The news outlet also observed that “Pelosi has been in Congress since 1987, when members were paid $89,500. Today, as speaker, Pelosi earns $223,500.”
The median salary in the United States is roughly $36,000.
