Oprah Reportedly Wanted To Run For President With Mitt Romney In 2020 To Stop Trump

Oprah Romney

Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) has shockingly claimed in a new book that Oprah Winfrey asked him to run for president with her back in 2020 in the hopes of stopping Donald Trump from being reelected, as she somehow believed that the two of them would beat him.

Winfrey’s Alleged Pitch To Romney

In the new book “Romney: A Reckoning,” which comes out a week from today, McKay Coppins writes that Romney told him that Winfrey, who is known to be a Democrat, called him up to pitch that they should run together in 2020 “to save the country” from Trump.

Romney, who was the Republican presidential nominee that failed to beat Barack Obama back in 2012, allegedly told Coppins that he rejected Winfrey’s idea because he believed them running together would only increase Trump’s chances of winning.

A spokesman for Winfrey is attempting to deny that this ever happened, however.

“In November 2019, Ms. Winfrey called Senator Romney to encourage him to run on an Independent ticket,” the spokesperson told Axios. “She was not calling to be part of the ticket and was never considering running herself.”

Another source close to Winfrey alleged that she “was never serious about running” for president, although some close to her still thought that she would at the time.

Winfrey And Trump Go At It

Winfrey had claimed in a 2018 interview that she had no interest in running for president.

“I had a lot of wealthy men calling, telling me that they would run my campaign and raise $1 billion for me,” she told CBS News. “I am actually humbled by the fact that people think that I could be a leader of the free world, but it’s just not in my spirit. . . it’s not in my DNA.”

That same year, Trump expressed his hopes that Winfrey would run for president in 2020 after she hosted a “60 Minutes” segment that featured a discussion between pro- and anti-Trump voters in Michigan.

“Just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point I knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 Minutes,” Trump tweeted afterwards, according to ABC News. “The questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. Hope Oprah runs [for president] so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others!”

Romney Won’t Seek Reelection

Meanwhile, Romney announced last month that he would not be running for re-election in 2024.

“I have spent my last 25 years in public service of one kind or another. At the end of another term, I’d be in my mid-80s. Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders,” Romney said in a video posted to his social media accounts. “They’re the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in.”

“While I’m not running for re-election, I’m not retiring from the fight,” he added. “I’ll be your United States senator until January 2025.”

Romney went on to take shots at both Trump and President Joe Biden.

“The next generation of leaders must take America to the next stage of global leadership,” he said. “We face critical challenges — mounting national debt, climate change and the ambitious authoritarians of Russia and China. Neither President Biden nor former President Trump are leading their party to confront them.”

Romney Attacks Trump

Romney has long had one of the worst cases of Trump derangement syndrome of anyone in politics, as he can’t seem to stand the fact that Trump succeeded in getting to the White House, something he failed miserably to do himself.

“Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University,” Romney said in a major speech delivered during the 2016 GOP presidential primary race. “He’s playing the members of the American public for suckers. He gets a free ride to the White House, and all we get is a lousy hat.”

It is quite frankly hilarious that Winfrey actually thought that she and Romney would ever have a chance of beating Trump together in a presidential race. Romney may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but at least he was smart enough to know that he and Winfrey stood no chance against Trump!
