Election watchdog groups are investigating whether or not recently divorced Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has taken her lover on trips funded by her campaign.

Chairman of the conservative National Legal and Policy Center, Peter Flaherty, filed a second complaint last month, after having submitted one prior, concerning  Omar’s campaign spending.

This week, the congresswoman’s divorce from husband Ahmed Hirsi became official. Omar’s reported lover, political consultant Tim Mynett, is also in the midst of a divorce after his wife found out about his affair with the Minnesota congresswoman.

Did Omar Spend Campaign Dollars On Her Boyfriend?

Flaherty wants the Federal Election Commission to look into payments made by Omar’s campaign, Ilhan for Congress to Mynett’s company, The E Street Group.

The Daily Mail reported Wednesday, “Ilhan’s campaign paid Mynett’s company more than $369,000 since hiring him in August of 2018 and payments run up until this past September. Nearly $25,000 is labeled as travel expenses, according to records filed to the FEC. “

Flaherty wrote, “If Ilhan for Congress reimbursed Mynett’s LLC for travel so that Rep. Omar would have the benefit of Mynett’s romantic companionship, the expenditure must be considered personal in nature. Federal Election Commission regulations prohibit the use of campaign funds for personal expenses collateral to travel…unless personal funds are used to reimburse the committee.”

Will An Investigation Even Happen?

Whether there is a probe into this matter is up to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who to date has refused refusal to schedule hearings to confirm new members of the agency that is tasked with enforcing campaign finance laws.

“Ilhan for Congress paid The E Street Group more than $222,000 between August last year and July when DailyMail.com exclusively revealed the affair between Omar and Mynett,” The Daily Mail noted. “It paid him a whopping $92,746 in July, and in August and September the company pocketed another $54,000, according to figures filed with the FEC. She has until November 20 to file her October figures.”

“If you total her expenditure, about one-third of it went to E Street,” Flaherty told The Daily Mail. “A disbursement can be a ”travel” expense or a ‘fundraising’ expense but it cannot be both, even if the travel is in conjunction with fundraising activities.”

Will Any of This Matter?

As Donald Trump continues to be the focus of an impeachment inquiry by Democrats, will any of them care what a member of their own party potentially did with her boyfriend and campaign dollars?

Probably not. The law doesn’t seem as important when those on the left side of the aisle run afoul of it.

At the very least, there needs to be a thorough investigation to decide of Ilhan Omar broke the law.
