Kim Jong-un met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in April, with Kim becoming the first North Korean leader to step into South Korea since fighting ended in the Korean War in 1953. In June, Trump would make history when he met with Jong-un at a summit in Singapore, making him the first U.S. President to meet a North Korean head of State.
Some have called for Trump to receive a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts, which would only be appropriate, given that Obama received one for doing nothing. Even before the meeting between Jong-un and Jae-in, Jae-in said that Trump “deserves big credit for bringing about the inter-Korean talks. It could be a resulting work of the US-led sanctions and pressure,” and said he deserves “big credit” again when it comes to their newly-pledged denuclearization.
While there have been justified doubts over just how committed North Korea is to denuclearization, two positive signs emerged this week.
First, both North and South Korea signed a joint agreement on denuclearization.
According to The Independent: “The North and South Korean leaders presented a joint agreement during their summit in Pyongyang on Wednesday that Kim Jong-un said represented a ‘leap forward’ for peace on the peninsula. At a joint press conference after the signing, South Korea‘s Moon Jae-in said North Korea had agreed to ‘permanently’ shut down all of its nuclear and missile testing facilities, in the presence of international experts, as long as the US takes reciprocal measures.”
Trump tweeted about the news this morning:
“North Korea recommits to denuclearization – we’ve come a long way.” @FoxNews

In addition to the peace talks, the two nations announced at a news conference following their meetings that they’ve agreed to seek to jointly host the 2032 Summer Olympics.

Kim Jong Un has agreed to allow Nuclear inspections, subject to final negotiations, and to permanently dismantle a test site and launch pad in the presence of international experts. In the meantime there will be no Rocket or Nuclear testing. Hero remains to continue being……..

….returned home to the United States. Also, North and South Korea will file a joint bid to host the 2032 Olympics. Very exciting!

Both peace talks and the thought of both nations jointly hosting the Olympics would’ve been completely unthinkable a mere two years ago. No President has done before what Trump did – both insult North Korea’s dictator and offer to meet in person – and every other President failed. Trump’s strategy could’ve been filed under the “so crazy it just might work” category early in the year – but now we know it did work.
Meanwhile, over 70% of liberals hope that North and South Korea don’t see peace. Why? So they don’t have to give Donald Trump credit for it.
