Nikki Haley: Older Politicians Should Undergo Cognitive Tests

Nikki Haley, Ambassador to the United Nations under Trump, believes older politicians should undergo a "cognitive test."

Nikki Haley, former Ambassador to the United Nations under Trump, believes older politicians should undergo a “cognitive test.”

The idea came about in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, where interviewer David Brody inquired as to whether Haley has any concerns about President Joe Biden in particular.

Rather than focus on Biden, Haley suggested that older lawmakers or White House occupants in general should undergo some sort of evaluation, comparing it to the disclosure of one’s tax returns.

“Well what I’ll tell you is, rather than making this about a person, we seriously need to have a conversation that if you’re gonna have anyone above a certain age in a position of power — whether it’s the House, whether it’s the Senate, whether it’s vice president, whether it’s president — you should have some sort of cognitive test,” she responded.

Nonpartisan Issue

Nikki Haley, in suggesting a cognitive test for older politicians, noted that Congress is currently dominated by “people in leadership positions that are old.”

“That’s not being disrespectful. That’s a fact,” she insisted.

The Washington Post reported over the summer that the Senate, for example, is currently the oldest in American history, with several lawmakers well over the age of 80.

“And when it comes to that, this shouldn’t be partisan,” Haley added. “We should seriously be looking at the ages of the people that are running our country and understand if that’s what we want.”

Questioning Competence

Former White House doctor and current Texas congressman Ronny Jackson joined thirteen other Republican lawmakers in sending a letter urging President Biden to undergo a cognitive test this past July.

The letter cited the president’s “mental decline and forgetfulness” and insisted “the American people deserve to have absolute confidence in their president.”

Popular podcast host Joe Rogan questioned Biden’s mental capacity at one point, suggesting “everybody knows he’s out of his mind.”

A poll earlier this month shows a clear majority of American voters don’t believe the Biden administration is competent.

According to Quinnipiac, 55 percent of Americans feel the administration is essentially incompetent compared to just 42 percent who believe they are capable of running the government.

Another poll by NBC News just days ago indicates Americans “give [Biden] low marks for competence and uniting the country.”

Haley pointed out that Biden sometimes seems unaware of what is happening within his own administration. For instance, the President’s seeming lack of awareness regarding fall fallout with France as a result of the U.S.’s nuclear submarine agreement with the UK and Australia.

“[Biden] asked me. He said, ‘What’s the situation?’ And I explained- he had not been aware of that,” White House Climate Envoy John Kerry explained. “He literally had not been aware of what had transpired.”

While not wanting to single Biden out, Haley says such apparent unawareness by the President makes people “nervous.”

“He can’t act like he doesn’t know something,” she said. “Because every time he acts like he doesn’t know something from ‘OK, they tell me to call on these reporters,’ you know, he keeps giving signals that he’s not with us.”

“So it’s not people hating on Biden, it’s Biden really showing the country that he’s not totally in charge, and that makes everyone nervous,” added Haley.
